My 17 year old asked...

...me if I'd take him (and pay of course) to a handgun training coarse when I go to finally get my CCW. It appears to me that if he does, that coarse would be good for him to get his CCW when he turns 21.

The CBI says this......(VI) A training certificate from a handgun training class obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application. The applicant shall submit the original training certificate or a photocopy thereof that includes the original signature of the class instructor. In obtaining a training certificate from a handgun training class, the applicant shall have discretion in selecting which handgun training class to complete.

Since he's well under the age of 21 at the time of taking the coarse, it shouldn't matter any correct??

Doesn't seem to me that it would much matter. Any training you can get him started on now will only encourage him to continue a life long effort.

i think it will be fine. i took my hunters ed class at 18 and used it when i was 25 under the old law. im sure if someone in the millitary passed there hand gun stuff at 18 they could use it when they turned 21. take him either way. last year i took my 9 year old son to hunters ed and we had a lot of fun doing it together.

A hunters education class will meet the reqiuirements, and is good for a lifetime.

Great! That's what I thought too. I may have the whole family trained at the same time. I thought I saw someone had an ad up at SPecialty Sports that he will even come to your house or group to teach a coarse.

A hunters safety course does not meet the requirements of a CCW. He needs to take at the very least the NRA basic handgun course.

In most counties (darn near all) a hunter safety course isn't accepted. In El Paso County, it is. Right or wrong, that's how it is. So take the course that is accepted in your area. Karl.

A. Doesn't matter - Training is Training. It may not be something that shows you a ton of new stuff, but if you pay attention you will learn something.

B. I wouldn't let one of my kids go for a CCW (even when they are old enough) without a lot of training. Damn the requirements, they just aren't enough in my mind, especially for young shooters.

C. The state law is rather vague IMHO.. but hey do what works for ya.

Under state law a hunters safety course does not meet the requirement for a CCW it has nothing to do with counties it's state law.

Under the old law it was different under the new law hunters safety does not qualify.

I would get him both hunters safety so he can hunt and the NRA basic pistol course so when he becomes of age he can get a CCW. Understand also that at the time he applies for his CCW his training course has to be less than 10 years old.

He has asked about taking a hunter's safety course also. He'd go with his moms husband (and thank god that poor basturd isn't me). I have no interest in hunting. While growing up I killed hundreds, possibly even over 1000 animals mostly sheep, cows, and pigs. My parents owned a small butchering plant in Iowa, and sometimes while they were busy cutting and wrapping the aged meat, I'd butcher what they had for the day. I could kill, skin, gut, cut off the legs and head, and quarter a steer in under 20 minutes at the age of 11. I have nothing against hunting or butchering animals, I just don't have the urge presently to do it.

I was a sick kid. I used to save the eyeballs and take them to school to freak out the girls in class. [roll]

The flyer you saw at specialty was for Bob Jolly. When I took my NRA basic handgun class I used him, and recomend his class.

I recently took my brother and son to get their hunters saftey February 18 2007. The intructor Bob Money said that the class met the CCW requirements for El Paso county.

I stand corrected the law in my opinion says "handgun" course and that means Hunters safety does not apply. Hunters safety is not a handgun course and until somebody challenges it so be it.

It is true that some departments are accepting it such as El Paso as Will stated. El Paso will take a hunters safety Jeffco will not so best check the county you live in before you get training to make sure it's accepted.

There is no substitute for good training. Train as much and as often as you can. Take a few good handgun classes.

Just FYI Larimer and Weld will also accept Hunters Safety courses.

I would reccomend Ed Rodriguez with Precision Defensive Shooting School. He goes way beyond your "basic" pistol requirements. He is a good guy and he is affordable. He also advertises through Specialty Sports. His number is 719-659-9858
