its been in the works a while. Hopefully for you city boys, it comes about. I doubt it will stem the tide of dirtbags leaving trash. But, we can hope.

just pouring a little gas in the national grassland....and the bullets start flying!
I wonder what kind of distances they'll have. I can't imagine much past 2-300 yards. 600 or even 1000 would sure be awesome though.
Interesting.
So would they close down all the open areas and only have shooting to the range??
That would suck.
Agree that would suck we always try to find a spot away from everyone. I don't want to shoot next to a bunch of asshat clowns & squirrely kids I don't know. If they lack the basic sense to pick up after themselves damn sure don't want to be around them handling firearms.
If they could do something like what they got in buena vista. It might not be a bad idea.
Thanks for the update HBar I have been wondering about this. I have a feeling once this gets built no more shooting in the grasslands only at the range.
This is cool!
I wonder about these stories that get written up in the paper. It seems a little stretched. I fear that those that lease these properties look for every angle they can to restrict us "city folks" from using them. I was out there last weekend and didn't really see any trash except rancher crap like broken buckets, old broken down equipment, etc. However, I will admit I did not look closely at the windmills to see if they were shot up. I know the water tanks I walked/drove up to were not full of holes.
But I too would not want to be next to unknowns at an open target range. I've done that and it does suck.
Seems you have gone to other shooting areas out there then, or shortly after a cleanup. The trash people leave out there is ridiculous.
We carried out what looked like the remains of a picnic table the last time we went out there. That reminds me though; clean out the truck.[Coffee]
I went to Pawnee for the sole reason that there's no formal range and I could get away from people. If I wanted a formal range, I'd just go to the Pawnee Sportsmens Center.
I have a feeling that as soon as that range is built, all other shooting on the Pawnee will cease. And from what I've heard about the range, it will only be 100 yards and 8-10 lanes.
to bad it won't be set up like the one in Grand Junction on the BLM land it's free and no range officer. Everyone polices themselves and they do a good job of doing it as well. Only trash you'll really see is the small remains of something someone shot up and someone set up a few steel target form the 800 to 1000 yard marks. I've never shot at this club before but I have passed it while doing work in Garden City I wish we had a couple ranges setup like this here

Are you just speculating that the Pawnee range "won't be set up like the one in Grand Junction on the BLM land"? I haven't heard one way or the other that there will be full time RO's at Pawnee (I doubt it - who would pay for that?), or even that there will be an admission fee. If you know something to the contrary, please, share with the class.
As for your range out there in Kansas, I don't see what's so special about it, besides their special-ed website. There are plenty of ranges in Colorado just like that, and better? What am I missing?
yeah its a shame how people trash the place, i was up there recently with islandermyk, pacman89, and jamesbond007 doing some long distance shots. we drug out two vacuums and a MOTORCYCLE that had been shot to hell. then to top off we had a group of yocals drive up to our 1000yd target and set up their targets in our line of fire. then they get mad at us when i drive down and tell them they're in our line of fire because "they had been coming there for years"
Calm down there sparky I'm just giving some examples and going off of from the article I read about pawnee and how the DOW will be there most of the time from the tone of the article. the only thing about that gun club in KS has is the plinking range so you ain't walking over glass or other trash that someone decided to shoot when you're walking out to set up your own target.
There was talk of using DOW Hunter Education volunteers as range officers at one time, don't know if its still the plan to use us.
I would agree that it would suck if they closed down the remainder of the grasslands, but it sucks pretty bad too how irresponsible a lot of the shooters are up there. Trash all over the place, and shooting other peoples property, instead of targets you bring yourself.
Yeah last time I was out there there was quite a bit of trash, plastic, glass, porcelin and apliances that were shot up. It is just sad that people can't just go out there with some targets and instead they have to shoot stuff like couch cushons and other crap they can't clean up. I have a small suv so I could not haul stuff out, but if I had a truck man I would haul stuff out every time I went up. I just hate all the trash!
That beeing said, a regulated range would be the end of my moving and shooting drills, drawing drills and weapon and target transition drills, I would be sad :( SO, I hope that I can keep shooting in the open.
I love going to great guns, I am a huge duck hunter and they have a great sporting clay and skeet range.
