We found out the hard way Weld cty no longer sent you a notice it was time, for renewal. I flashed my permit because a LE asked to see it. GUESS WHAT EXPIRED A YEAR AGO OOPSSSSS . But officer NO ONE TOLD ME [BooHoo]

You mean to say that some cop accosted you about your expired CHP and you didn't video record the incident and post it up on You Tube???[ROFL1]

Are all permits valid for the same length of time, or is that county specific as well?

Colorado permits are valid 5 years from date of issue. If memory serves, you can apply for renewal up to 120 days before they expire, and if you do not apply for renewal within 60 days after it expires, you have to go through the whole process again.

Permits are all 5 years from date of issue, per state law (CRS 18-12-204(1)(b). Permit contents - validity - carrying requirements)

if you let the permit expire, you have 6 months to renew it (CRS 18-12-211(2). Renewal of permits).
They indicate that you can start the renewal process as early as 120 days prior to permit expiration (per CRS 18-12-211. Renewal of permits).

If you renew before the permit expires, "normal" renewal fees (not more than $50 per CSR 18-12-211(1). Renewal of permits) apply (but they DO vary a bit by county).
After the permit expires, but before 6 months after it expired, there is often a "late fee" charged by the county of $15 (per CRS 18-12-211(2). Renewal of permits).

If you wait until the permit is more than 6 months expired, you are back to square #1 and must go through the whole New Application process (Larger fee, fingerprints, notary etc.) again.

Seems to be COUNTY dependent.

Interesting. The way I read CRS, I think they (Weld County) are doing it wrong. I guess OK for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone from the state tells them that have to change that at some point.

UPDATE:
I went on Friday for a renewal. You get scanned by the metal detector, and then they have you sit in the lobby with all the people coming in from the street. Whatever.

Took about 30-40 minutes to be seen. The metal detector guy gives you a numbered laminated card. It starts at number 7, I don't know why. I waited about 30-40 minutes till someone came out and asked who was there for CCW. There were about 5 people, but I was the only one to get up. I think the others were there for the sexual predator registration. Either someone has a sense of humor, they think CCWers are like child molesters, or they think that evertually the problem will just work itself out ;)

So no appt. necessary. She took my stuff and even printed off a new card for me since the expiring one was starting to fall apart. She said if you are going to carry it in your wallet all the time (who doesn't???) you should laminate it to protect it.

The major change was that she said I would get a letter saying that I my renewal was ready and that I have to come down to pick it up. I though they just mailed out the CCW when I was got my last one.

Kind of a pain. Nice lady cop. Saw an NRA sticker on one of the lockers. I hope they work under 90 days since my current one would expire a few days before that.

So we went in to renew our permits from Boulder County and they discovered they can't do it because of the new gun laws that passed. We use to live in Boulder County and that is where we originally got the permits from, but we moved to Erie, and are now in Weld County. According to what they were told by CBI as they were running our background checks, you can now only get permits from the county you actually live in, regardless of where the permit was issued. CBI claims that we can go to Weld County and only have to pay the renewal fee, not the fee for a whole new CHP. The lady at Boulder County said she has 4 other people she had to inform about this change and she had no idea why the new law was thought to provide any sort of safety or any benefit to any associated parties (citizen or government).

The only problem is all the information on everyone's website still says you can only renew in the county that originally issued the permit. Any one have any sources to back up the CBI's statement??
