Compared to what? Please leave chicken little crap out of my forum. They say white is safer than brown and that is what we store. But once again there are no #'s just a bunch of BS like the saccharin scare.Quote:
According to a sobering report released to "Good Morning America" by Consumer Reports magazine this morning, rice eaten just once a day can drive arsenic levels in the human body up 44 percent. Rice eaten twice a day can lead to a 70 percent increase in arsenic.
YOUR ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!!!! Just don't know when. [Flower]
regular soda is bad! So is diet soda!

Bacon,,, Good
Bacon,,, Bad
Just don't eat or drink anything and see what that will do for ya.
Well, let's talk about a real rice issue then. I have a 20lb bag of rice sitting on my floor in my family room. When it rained last week, water came into the house and covered the floor. I have no idea how deep the water was, probably less than a centimeter, but I'm sure that some seeped into the seem along the bottom of the bag of otherwise dry rice. Can I just take the top 95% of rice and seal it up into something else, or will I need to toss my entire 20lb bag?
And how come Asian people live longer?
Guess I'm dying soon
Uh oh time out is in order
Naw, rice is nice, lookee how many billion peoples in China. It's the freaking popcorn that will hurt you...cough, cough...[Pop]

A steady diet of FUD for the sole purpose of selling something, anything. Think sex sells? Try fear! Screw that eat, drink and live as pleases you but live. You never know what will get you or when.
Until they put up numbers and limits it is all garbage. And yes it is up to me because what you posted is nothing more than what the other members have said.
This is good, this is bad. Now it is bad, now it is good. Until facts and numbers are up it is all scare tactics.
it's sensational journalism. They give no actual levels
Everything can and will kill you so... yeah thats a thing
All right FastMan, time for a quick, public, Come To Jesus meeting.
First, Jerrymrc is an Administrator on this site and what he says is the rule of law. You should feel very relieved that he's in a good mood today & that your comment wasn't made to me or you'd be a former member of this site by now.
Secondly, the S&P forum is Jerrymrc's brainchild. It wouldn't exist today if it weren't for him championing it. Given that I know him very well, I'd be very surprised to find out that you have more knowledge & experience in this area than he does. That alone gives him the right to determine what is considered "chicken little crap".
If you have any comment besides a public apology to Jerrymrc, make it via PM to ME.
Extended Probationary User.... [ROFL1]
Double secret probation...[Coffee]
It's like the battle with butter and margarine.First it was reported butter was bad for your health, cholesteral, fat and what have you and margarine was so much better. Then there were studdies and such and all of the sudden margarine was no better than butter but actualy worse off.
Now who knows where it stands..
Just like everything...moderation...
So eat away![Dinner]
FastMan is Bad for you.[ROFL1]
To give FastMan a smidgen of credit, I didn't know Jerrymrc is a forum moderator/founder, either. His original post might not have been "valuable" necessarily, but he was just trying to get the word out so to speak. Granted, the content is a prime example of sensationalist journalism, I don't think FastMan did anything to warrant banishment. Well, not unless, a really disgraceful comment was removed from the thread before I read it.
It's Friday guys! Let's be happy and friendly :)
It would behoove newbies to read the TOS and other posts at the top of each subforum, and to try and understand the managers and mods of our forums.
Hell I even fuk up once in awhile (On purpose so I look like a regular guy not the Superior being I am of course).
And control the instant foot in mouth reaction to posts.
Nothing has been done to him. He posted a comment that basicly said I had no rights to moderate this forum or him......... I guess we need to have a class but I thought because almost every VB is the same that everyone knew how to tell the staff. Blue is members, Green is IP's, Orange is mods/super mods and red is Admins. We also have purple for the server jocky's but they have admin power as well. We have added pink for a couple of "special" members. :)
Good rule of thumb, don't piss off the red name guys.
Watch your backside around those "pink members" too...[Help]
Hmmm, interesting. I can see plants accidentally utilizing arsenic in some molecules. It will react similar to phosphorous, but it's a larger molecule, so it could be able to incorporate itself into organic phosphates disrupting ATP production, citrus cycle, glycolysis, and might even work as an inhibitor to some phosphate activated enzymes.
Ah, here ya go. Much better article. http://medicalxpress.com/news/2011-1...-exposure.html
Basically we know it's there, but we haven't really determined the potential impact (if any) of the As levels. For pregnant women and infants, it's a fairly safe bet even low levels are concerning enough to not eat too much, but for a healthy adult? Don't know. It's As's affinity to oxidate and then react with other molecules that makes it so dangerous, this and it's not part of the human pathways but readily replaces phosphorous which is everywhere. I suspect you would have to have a fairly high level and long term exposure to As to see serious damage. P is even more oxidatively reactive and we have harnessed this to our advantage millions of years ago in our bodies. P also produces more peroxides within our cells than As would also, but we have peroxidase enzymes to counteract these effects.
I would like to see more information from current research on acceptable levels of As ingestion before calling this one alarming. For all we know, rice plants have always had an affinity to absorb As and we have always ingested these levels without any serious health problems. It does beg to have a few questions answered though.
(Jedi hand wave) jerrymrc never said that.
I see this thread getting talked about in another thread which was focused on moderation practices here. The following was posted in it by SA Friday, in regards to what happened in this thread.
Some inaccuracies in that quote. I had no intentions of insinuating the information in the article in the link was "fact". I simply posted it to inform people that the topic was in the news, with the hopes that an intelligent conversation on the topic would ensue. I thought folks in this forum would have interest in the topic, seeing so many of us (myself included) store rice. Seemed a worthy story to at least explore a little deeper, to try to discover if there was anything in it worthy of concern.
That's why I was taken back a bit by the reaction to my starting the thread. By management complaining I shouldn't have done it. Say what? It just didn't jive with how my inquisitive mind works. Like myself, I thought others would at least be interested in looking into it, digging a little deeper, talking it over, deciding for themselves if any modifications to what they're doing was warranted, or not. I didn't intend the story in the link to be intended to represent a bottom line conclusion on the subject, but rather to simply serve as a spring board for initiating a discussion and further exploration.
What's funny here, is the very idea of prepping is an activity that most folks consider a result of someone falling victim to "chicken little" fear mongering. They live with their heads in the sand, because they don't want to deal with the reality or implications of the possibility that their cushy existence might somehow get severely disrupted. It's just more than they want to mentally deal with. I expected more from this group. At the very least, some curiosity and intelligent discussion about this topic.. Not, "we shouldn't even discuss this". I was blown away by that, and truth be told, quite disappointed.
The other inaccuracy in the quote above was the depiction of the private conversation I had afterwards with management via PM. The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated. Over several PM's they presented their perspective on the conflict, and I presented mine. We did not achieve a meeting of the minds, and I signed off saying I might lurk but would not be posting much anymore because I did not like the way moderation was conducted. I was told my account would be active and there waiting for me, if I changed my mind. I doubt I will. This has left a bad taste in my mouth. Adding to that bitter taste is the above quoted public discussion of private PM's between a myself and management that I found in another thread. I own and run an internet discussion forum myself, and that is a major no-no.
So anyway, this is likely my last post on this forum. It's been fun chatting with many of you guys. God bless us on November 6th, and perhaps I'll see you sometime in the woods or at the range.
... Yet you still wasted your time posting that last post [Tooth] One thing about a private forum is... you get to see everyone's own perspective on many topics, but at the end of the day the owner(s)/mods' trump them all. If you disagree, big freaking deal. Voice your disagreement and move onto the next topic.
Your original post on this starts with a WARNING, and ends with, better read this! -- I agree w/ Jerry, that kind of sky is falling post shouldn't be encouraged. Then your next post was getting personal toward Jerry himself. This whole thing could have been a simple post of the article/news and 'what do you guys think?' instead of presented as a factual warning.
I've seen the PMs. The mods CC each other so we know what's going on. Downplay it all you want, that's not how it played, read, or was intended from your end and you know it. Play the wounded self-righteous all you want, but you are far from a martyr. Well, as long as the public discussion isn't about you, you're all good, right? I have not seen nor will I ever see you correcting the information in the other thread that was erroneous directed towards the mod in question. Right?
But you are right, I shouldn't have aired that laundry. Sorry about that. It would have been better to just not address it. Leaving the erroneous perspective in the other thread and sit back and doing nothing over a 'code of silence' is simply a much better plan of action. You were going to step forward and correct the error. Oh wait, you said you weren't coming back.
Good idea.
Your interpretation of the behind doors interaction is your own, as is mine. Best they both be left there, as they should have been in the first place. My intentions in this thread were spelled out in black and white in my post above. If you choose to disbelieve and paint them different I have no control over that. As far as the "error" you refer to my coming forward to correct, I don't know what you're referring to. Fill me in and I'll correct or confirm as appropriate. After which you can go ahead and claim me disingenuous again.
Yeah, can't even leave around here without the mods continuing to talk about you after you're gone.
The "warning" in the thread title was simply to identify what the story in the news was about. It was not my warning, it was simply the subject matter of the article. "Better read this" meant; if you want to be up to date on what's in the news today about rice storage.
Any "sky is falling" contentions you interpreted me personally making in my opening post was not my intention.
Post number 30. The one I replied to. It was about this closed thread and the heavy handedness of the mods here. By your previous post, the heavy handedness never occurred. You both came to an agreement. Nor was the thread actually closed.
Ya, we can agree to disagree.
I think rice tastes good!
The thread getting closed statement had already been corrected, from memory by Irving I think.
To the contrary, we did not come to agreement, as I suggested by saying in that post, "we did not achieve a meeting of the minds".
Agee to disagree, indeed. Nice to agree on something.
That last post thingy didn't stick eh?
You got a bad reaction to a thread, it happens to everyone get over it already. Dust yourself off, learn from it and try again or give up, whining just makes you look bad.
