Don't really think of using it as an oil and a grease and use them that way. The paste and the liquid are basically exactly the same thing. I just use the liquid to put on a patch to run through the barrel, and use the paste to paint it everywhere else.
Also, think of it as cosmoline on military weapons or seasoning cast iron: it's meant so soak into the metal. So disassemble, paint it on everywhere, then stick it in a crockpot, under a hair dryer, in the oven (if you're single or want to be) or in a cardboard box on a nice hot day in the sun for several hours then let it cool. One or two treatments like this and it'll stay slick.
