For hunting?
Yes, and target as well
What are you planning to hunt with it?
Deer elk...and any coyote that decides to walk in front of my muzzle
Have you looked into the .338 Federal? If I was going to hunt elk it would probably be my first choice. Not that you couldn't take an elk with the .308.
Its going to be a lighter AR-10 if you plan on lugging it around the hills looking for elk. They get pricey in a hurry.
I would lean towards a Remington R-25.
Or DPMS. Both start at $1100-1200 range. Check out our trading post section... last dpms sold was $1000.
Dpms and the remington are the same gun. Unless the camo is a must (in your opinion) I'd go with the dpms. From what I've read the camo wears easily on the remingtons
And yes, go lightweight. I have the LR308, sold my slickside upper with the 16" or 18" bbl to buy the A3 with the 24" stainless barrel, it is HEAVY. Not looking forward to lugging it around the hills.
Really can't stress the light think enough. I puffed my m1a all around the hills looking for elk and it made for a difficult time.
I went out last year with my POF... Wish it was lighter... [Beer]
But ACCURATE! Mine has given several Sub MOA groups with DAG surplus, and with 168 SMKs is sub MOA all day long. All this with a battle heavy trigger. The next purchase will be a trigger for this gun. My only gripes with my LR .308 are the unrefined trigger and the noticably sharper recoil vs. the lighter bolt guns I have.
Took out an LR 308 two years ago... 9.5 pounds is a muthafugga to lug around. Go lite if you plan on walking much.
I don't think that the .308 AR platform really makes much of a big game gun, but obviously others disagree. The design carries a lot of weight penalty for features that aren't really relevant to elk or deer hunting.
Make sure you can find 5 round magazines for it.
i would never carry my ar10 for big game hunting...2 heavy. RRA 20", no way in hell. I like my browning ss stalker 6lbs...running vs lugging, your call.
Texan Chiming in here, but a lightweight barrel in iether 16" or 18" seems like it would work nicely.
If your really wanted to go lightweight, you might look at 6.8spc in a LW barrel. (I don't know your CO laws, I assume it is legal, I may be wrong).
