Was cutting some aluminum this morning and running out of air. Cutting and waiting for her to kick in. Didn't happen!
Come to find out, the 80 amp breaker fried. No one, I mean no one, in Loveland/Fort Collins has a 3 phase 80 amp breaker in stock!! WTF??
Looking at one by 10am tomorrow, Friday! [Bang]

Our big compressor seized a month ago. I couldn't get a replacement in for 2 weeks. Fortunately, a customer had a trailer mounted unit he loaned us to get by.
I feel for you. I didn't realize how many of our machines required air until we had none.
Is the breaker at the panel? Shut off the panel and tie it to the mains (naughty) you could stick a fused disconnect in there to protect the wire.
Or is the breaker in the machine? Put in fuses in it's place.
Our Compressors are our life blood, no air no production. We have two, one is a backup..I'd like to have another.
Be careful. Something caused that high amp draw. Replacing the breaker maybe be a very small piece of the puzzle.

we just had a 3 phase 120 hp motor go out on us last week. It melted the breaker contacts together and tripped a main upstream breaker. Sucks, have you ran inductance and resistance checks on the compressor motor? Might want to order 2 breakers if you haven't. Ours fried the new breaker during current load checks and we had to go get another one. It lasted about 3 trips and 20 minutes of run time before the long time delay over-currents fried.
Why dont you drive the 45 minutes to Greybar off Pecos and I-70 and get the breaker?
Call Grainger and drive the whole 1 hour to get it off Tejon and Alameda.

I read that to mean they were using the breaker as a switch. But if it was tripping twice a day, then it needed attention. More than likely the breaker is sized to the FLA. If that's the case then it's probably tripping due to the inrush current of the motor starting. If it has thermal protection then the breaker can be sized up to 250% of FLA if it's a standard breaker type. (thermal magnetic circuit breaker). 175% if it has time delay fuses.Quote:
