So I have a 6 week old German Shepard. I feed my 5yo GSP some real food when I make us burgers, steak, whatever and he handles it ok, but with this pup I can start him out the proper way. Do any of you have your dogs on a "raw diet?" Did you just start feeding them meat or did you mix it in with the dog food and ween them off? What do you usually feed them... chicken, beef, pork? Are there any meats they shouldn't be eating? Anything obscure things I should know?
My Shep eats raw chicken w/ the bones. She's used to it since she was young. Boiled chicken meat and rise for the sensitive english bulldog. Once awhile, both get raw egg yolk as treat. Keep them on multi vitamin no matter what.
We are considering doing this with our next dog. The breeder site has this link on their page; http://www.rawfed.com/ I figure if the breeder has it listed on their page it must be reliable as they've been feeding their dog this diet for years.... Hope it helps
I have done raw diets in the past with my shepherds and rotties. Ranch foods direct in Colorado Springs does a dog food that is ground up beef our turkey, my boys always liked the beef better. It cost about the same as any quality dog food. Avoid raw eggs according to my vet not good for them, he is a big advocate of raw diets. Give them carrots for treats, they love that.
Friend's dogs are on a raw diet. She usually just feeds them the cheap chicken stuff you can pick up at the market.
She told me that the adjustment period usually results in the runs, and there's no feasible "weaning" that prevents that, that she knows of. She owns acreage so the dogs are just allowed to pop out whenever they want.
We had a dog die when I was a kid after eating a chicken bone. She got it out of the trash if I remember right and somewhere in her intestine it poked a hole and she died a pretty painful death until we figured out what was going on and put her down. It was too late by the time that we got x-rays and found the problem.
I think that any dog will shit all over when you change their food. I had to let my dog out every hour - 2 hours when I switched her from what the shelter was feeding her to the food she gets now.

You need to watch the chicken, many dogs develop allergies to it. You also need to be careful with a large breed such as a Shep. Too much protein too young and the dog can grow too quickly, causing long term problems.
A quality large breed puppy food with a touch of raw mixed in will serve quite well.

I was at the butcher yesterday getting ground beef and steals and such and the gal that runs the counter was nice enough to give us their scrap. Some chicken, ribs, and beef.

I've never had my dog on a "raw" diet. My girlfriend always cooks for her. For breakfast she has biscuits and gravy or eggs with hash browns. For lunch it will be baked chicken, tamales with green chili or enchiladas. For dinner, a pork chop with no bone, once a ribeye, but I finally put a stop to the steaks. I keep telling her the dog has dog food, but it doesn't help. The dog does not like raw food. She will refuse to eat it until it is cooked. Maybe that's why my dog has doubled in size since we got her.

"Deogee" Nah, I have known of two dawgs that were named that. Both were knuckleheads.
The wifey will be happy to help you get a diet together that will be best for your pooch and your wallet. She really knows her stuff when it comes to the critters.
