Just bought a new Dillon 650 - what am I missing

Santa Claws gave me the go-ahead to 'pull the trigger' - this is for doing 5.56 and 308.. Anything else I am missing (besides media tumblers, case cleaners, etc - as I have those from many many years ago).

Unless you want spent primers all over the reloading bench, do the spent primer mod, or order one off ebay. You can find the stuff to do it at ace or home depot. There are plenty of instructions on the internets on how to do it.

you spent too much money on a tool set and the primer flip tray. Generic allen head t handle wrenches and flip tray could have been purchased for under $25 for both items. At least you jumped in with both feet. Enjoy the new addiction.

Forgot, pick up Lyman's latest reloading manual, download the load data from the mfg for the powder you're using, BUY COMPONENTS NOW, Then BUY MORE. I prefer the Giraud over a dillon trimmer, because the G is so much quieter and less messy, if done right.

Jim, any suggestions on a tool setup that mounts cleanly to the 650? I don't know if COSteve over on arf is also a member here but theres a thread over there where he's showing off his tool setup. I'm about to order in a couple 650 setups - one for a customer and one for me, and I'd appreciate any advice, or I'll probably just grab the Dillon kit.

Hi Brian,

One thing you might need to add is an extra powder die for your powder check system on your 45 tool head. The powder feed needs a powder die AND the powder check system needs a powder die. I missed this when I added my 9mm conversion. It's easy enough to rob a powder die from a different tool head, but that sorta defeats the purpose of having duplicates of everything to make the conversion easier/quicker. For $11, it's kinda a no-brainer IMHO.

I lucked in to a dillon tool stand (gratis) few weeks ago. it's nice, but something that cannot be done other ways. Like a magnetic strip / mount. My dillon tool stand is mounted to a shelf between the presses . Easier access for all users.

If you already have allen heads (who doesn't) why have more of them? Some my only have 1 set of allen wrenches, myself i'm literally tripping over them. HF has them for a good price. realistically the need for a super duty set is not there.

Any time you want to do a caliber change it's easier (yet not cheaper) to do a caliber quick change assy. OR if staying with one tool head use hornady lock rings. This enables you to change dies / calibers with little or no adjustments when swapped.

I just cry once and order a powder measure for all of my toolheads that I use for non-precision ammo. Saves huge time adjusting and tinkering. But I am lazy like that.

The little electronic buzzer piece slips into a powder die. This **EXTRA** powder die for the powder **CHECKING** system is **NOT** included in the conversion kit.

It's a bummer to order many $$ worth of stuff and then be short an $11 powder die. Lucky for me, I happened to be in Scottsdale shortly after I realized my mistake and stopped by Dillon and purchased one in person. Just trying to save the OP from making my mistake.

Yah... I didn't notice that, but I could see the benefit of keeping those rods with a specific caliber. The powder checker system comes with 3 different rods, but you might need to use the same size rod in 2 different calibers. In my case, I'm pretty sure that I use the same rod for .40 S&W and 9mm. I have to readjust the rod when I switch calibers. If the goal is the most efficient changeover, I could see where an extra rod would be good to have for another $15.

You can buy the extra rod directly from Dillon, too, so I guess maybe the package deal is what's exclusive to Enos. Check out Dillon part numbers 21372, 21373 and 21374.

I found out about $2000 into my reloading equipment purchase that you can "it's only another $15" yourself into the poor house! Oh well... Reloading is still cheaper than many of my other hobbies... And just think of the money I'm saving each time I burn through 150 rounds at the range!

Any thoughts on the handgun dies? Most folks stick with dillon for rifle, but for pistol - llots of opinions out there.

The most popular answers I've read:
1) Stick with Dillon because blue is pretty and always best
2) Lee 4 die set is cheaper, just as good, and maybe even better for handgun
3) Get the Dillon set and add the 5th Lee factory crimp die if/when needed

No issue so far with my one pistol die set, but I will never buy another Lee rifle die set. I've already had issue with both the .223 and .308 FL dies.

If everyone agreed it would be a boring forum.

I like the Lee crimp, and what ever dies i am able to pick up for a decent price.
I use dillon & rcbs for everything Except when loading 223, after it's been sized, deprimed tumbled. I have the lee universal deprimer die in station 1, to remove any media that might linger in the flash hole.

For pistol and 223 blaster ammo I like my Dillon dies.
Redding and Forster for anything precision rifle related.

It's really all personal preference realistically but I'm not a fan of certain dies.
