I am trying to bat down the endless calls from all my liberal friends to ban guns. So I am coming to you guys to get some facts. To my knowledge CT was still a state like NY that still had the assault weapons ban in place. If not what laws did they have. What I have been telling them is that CT already banned them and that banning guns did not prevent this one bit. So help me out here with some facts.
We dont own assualt weapons, we own sporting rifles.
No civilian can own an assualt weapon.

A person who has been issued a certificate of possession of an assault weapon may possess it only under the following conditions:
- At the person’s residence, place of business or other property owned by that person, or on property owned by another with the owner’s express permission;
- While on the premises of a target range of a public or private club or organization organized for the purpose of practicing shooting at targets;
- While on a target range which holds a regulatory or business license for the purpose of practicing shooting at that target range;
- While on the premises of a licensed shooting club;
- While attending any exhibition, display or educational project which is about firearms and which is sponsored by, conducted under the auspices of, or approved by a law enforcement agency or a nationally or state recognized entity that fosters proficiency in, or promotes education about, firearms; or
- While transporting the assault weapon between any of the places mentioned above, or to any licensed gun dealer, for servicing or repair, provided the assault weapon is unloaded, kept in the trunk of such vehicle or in a case or other container which is inaccessible to the operator of or any passenger in such vehicle.
The theft of a lawfully possessed assault weapon must be reported to the police within 72 hours of discovery.
An “Assault Weapon” is defined as: Any selective-fire firearm capable of fully automatic, semiautomatic or burst fire at the option of the user or any of the following specified semiautomatic firearms:
- Algimec Agmi;
- Armalite AR-180;
- Australian Automatic Arms SAP Pistol;
- Auto Ordnance Thompson type;
- Avtomat Kalashnikov AK-47 type;
- Barrett Light-Fifty model 82A1;
- Beretta AR 70;
- Bushmaster Auto Rifle and Auto Pistol;
- Calico models M-900, M-950 and 100-P;
- Chartered Industries of Singapore SR-88;
- Colt AR-15 and Sporter;
- Daewoo K-1, K-2, Max-1 and Max-2;
- Encom MK-IV, MP-9 and MP-45;
- Fabrique Nationale FN/FAL, FN/LAR, or RN/FNC;
- FAMAS MAS 223;
- Feather AT-9 and Mini-AT;
- Federal XC-900 and XC-450;
- Franchi SPAS-12 and LAW-12;
- Galil AR and ARM;
- Goncz High-Tech Carbine and High Tech Long Pistol;
- Heckler & Koch HK-91, HK-93, HK-94 and SP89;
- Holmes MP-83; MAC-10, MAC-11 and MAC-11 Carbine type;
- Intratec TEC-9 and Scorpion;
- Iver Johnson Enforcer model 3000;
- Ruger Mini-14/5F folding stock model only;

- Sterling MK-6 and MK-7;

- Street Sweeper and Striker 12 revolving cylinder shotguns;
- USAS-12;
- UZI Carbine, Mini-Carbine and Pistol;
- Weaver Arms Nighthawk;
- Wilkinson “Linda” Pistol; or
- a part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an assault weapon that may be rapidly assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person;
- Any semiautomatic firearm not listed above that meets the following criteria:
- A semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following:
- A folding or telescoping stock;
- A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
- A bayonet mount;
- A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and
- A grenade launcher; or
- A semiautomatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following:
- An ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;
- A threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip or silencer;
- A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned;
- A manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and
- A semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm; or
- A semiautomatic shotgun that has at least two of the following:
- A folding or telescoping stock;
- A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
- A fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds; and
- An ability to accept a detachable magazine; or
- A part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an assault weapon, or any combination of parts from which an assault weapon may be rapidly assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person.
The term “assault weapon” does not include any firearm modified to render it permanently inoperable.

I think the shooter was 20 years old (not sure about this). If so, Federal law says he cannot purchase handguns. So the handguns were illegal or stolen or taken from a friend or family member. Apparently he had 2 handguns. Does conneticut have a law stating possession of handguns is prohibited by those under 21????? If so, here is another law this nutbag broke.

Because you guys are smart and I trust you to tell the truth and to help me see things from a different perspective. Case in point the person who posted that AR15s are not "assault weapons". I was still using the media hype definition when in reality only full auto weapons are. I have liberal acquaintances, only a couple do I consider friends, and they wouldn't start calling and bashing me over this incident. IMHO, i'd consider looking at the friends chosen, or the designation of "friend" to you. I'm not attacking, just typing out loud.

I think it is more constructive to talk to all people, including ones that don't agree with you. The more we talk, the better we all are in the end. I don't like the idea of un friending people just because we don't 100% agree with all things the same. At least this is my view.

Most news outlets have been reporting all day it was two 9mm handguns, a Glock 19 and a Sig. There has been some mention of a .223 caliber rifle found in his car, but that report has not been consistent across the news sources I've seen. Assault Rifle is the term given to a select fire full auto/burst fire weapon. Assault Weapon is the name given by the gun grabbers for semi-automatic rifles cosmetically resembling assault rifles in the awb. Let's keep things straight. If we can't, they sure the hell won't. :banghead:

Sec. 53-202a. Assault weapons: Definition. (a) As used in this section and sections 53-202b to 53-202k, inclusive, "assault weapon" means:

(iv) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and

oh, and there are no pistol restrictions that I know of...you need a permit to CCW, and there is no law "preventing" open carry with your permit, the permit to carry in CT is a "permit to carry" not to "CCW"
this is in the state constitution...
but the federal restriction on "gun free school zones" restricts carry in schools (another law this kid ignored)
Sec. 53a-217b Possession of A Weapon on School Grounds: Class D Felony.
(a) A person is guilty of possession of a weapon on school grounds when, knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he possesses a firearm or deadly weapon, as defined in section 53a-3, (1) in or on the real property comprising a public or private elementary or secondary school or (2) at a school-sponsored activity as defined in subsection (h) of section 10-233a.
Minimum Age for Possessing and Transporting of Handguns.
Connecticut 21 Y/O Title 29, Chapter 529, Sec. 29-34. & 29-36f This is the minimum age for possessing and transporting a handgun unloaded and secured in a vehicle without any type of permit/license to carry firearms.
So no one googled the "Sulivan Act"..... Short synopsis, Sulivan was a New York politician that as it turned out was a criminal and had many criminal pals. His pals were extorting and thieving from New York City small shop owners. The shop owners could protect themselves with their weapons. Well, of course the criminal element didn't much care for that. Mr. Sulivan imposed gun control amendments so his pals could extort with impunity. Another case where a corrupt politician lining his pockets at the cost of common American people.....
