Aside from the range at Cherry Creek are there really no public outdoor ranges in the S. Metro Area? Am I missing something.

Yep, pretty much true. Land is too valuable, neighborhoods sprout and fill with left coasters who bitch about the noise. Just ask the Boy Scouts. (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6366)
If you are willing to expand your driving distance, there's Golden Gun Club for public shotgun (trap/skeet) open to the public, GGC is near Watkins, not Golden anymore. There's also Kiowa Creek for clays. Way up north you can try Pawnee. Then there's public lands.
I haven't been back to Cherry Creek for years. They seem to be hyper paranoid someone will put a round off the range. They don't allow suppressors or FA fire. Maybe the new management is better.
I just went to the Cherry Creek range for the first time Saturday.No rapid fire allowed-1 sec between rds..Quite a few AR's on the range-including mine.Since I'm an NRA instructor I was impressed with range safety in general for a public range.I've been on some crazy public ranges.I know the owner and the RSO from Boy Scout years on Peaceful Valley ranges so I was comfortable with them.I'll definetly return there.
I guess whats kept me away has been the price. I think it BS you have to but a parks pass along side the range fee. Come on, One or the other.

Yeah-the parks pass was hard to swallow but it's getting hard to find places to shoot anymore so I ponied up for a year pass. That's the cheapest way to do it if your going to go out there regularly and you don't want to join their club.

$120 for 6 months access doesn't seem absurd.
I would be willing to research the National Forest areas around me (Pine) that are open to shooting and that could be setup for 300+ yd shooting if anyone is interested. Let me know.

Pete - if you budget 2 hours for your first trip, take a 4wd truck, a snow shovel, and a chain saw with you this time of year, you're guaranteed to get there on time and be able to shoot.
The FR going to the place can be snowy as well as the road going up to the club has some north facing shadowed slopes. Once you get 1/4 mile up that road you are good. We also get some deadfall on the road sometimes, hence the chain saw.
BCGC/Camp Fickes is a great place to make a day of it when the weather is good. The Colorado Trail crosses the road going into the club. The area is great for hiking and mountain biking. You can stick with the trail or bushwack with a GPS, my preferred way to go.
On a good weather day once you know where to go plan on 1 hr 40 min to get there.
Is Camp Fickes on the dirt road that runs between Bailey and Buffalo Creek?
Hmmm. I have been on that CT trail segment and heard the guns in the distance, but am not sure where the club is exactly, or how to get there except by backpacking :)Quote:
