So, I have a .308 that I plan on shooting from 100 to 600 yards with. Do I really need a scope base with built in elevation for those distances? Even if I don't need it, will it be a problem if I do use one?
Thanks.

At those distances, no you don't need a 20MOA base. Would it hurt no. would i get one yes. Long range shooting is adicting. After a while 600yds won't seem that far. Then you will be glad you have one.

I see they offer them in 15, 20, and 30 MOA. Wold 20 be the best all-around? I can just about guarantee you I would probably never shoot past about 1,000 yards.
I've got an extra you can have. I think you might need to come up with the screws though. PM me your address if you want it, I'll mail it.
If you don't have a base yet there is no reason not to get one with cant built in .
I think a base with 20 moa is about the most you can use with a 1" scope. If you went to 30moa you might not be able to sight in at 100yds. Now if you have a 30mm scope you could probably get away with a 30-40moa base.[Flower]
It's a 30mm scope. I just ordered a base and some rings. Thanks everyone. [Beer]
Then your going to need it re crowned, bedded, a new trigger.
I might know somebody.....[pick-me][pick-me][pick-me]
Believe me.. I thought the same way, and the way you shoot/put'em groups together at a 100 yards... a thousand will be cake for you...
Get the 20 MOA you won't regret! With enough to hold over (depending with the reticle you got on your glass) you can probably stretch it to a mile [Tooth]
What base did you end up going with? I'm in the exact same boat as you, I have a 700 on order (in stock, but still hasn't shipped due to backlog, and then I have to wait for CBI once it finally arrives) and I already have a scope (the old Springfield Armory 6x40 Gov Model scope that I've had for ~10 years) w/ rings, now I just need a base. I'm looking at this on Brownells: http://www.brownells.com/optics-moun...Remington__700 I'd love to know if you found a good deal elsewhere, though.
Ha. That's funny. That's the same one I ordered. I figure they are all pretty much the same. EGW seems to be a decent company. I have used some of their 1911 stuff. We'll see I guess. The only thing I wan't 100% sure about was to buy that one or go with something in steel.
Steel is fine. EGWs are fine. I have one or two on guns right now. 20 MOA for a 308 is just right. Most 30mm scopes will shoot at a 100 yds with them and still go out to 1000 yds. You are looking at about 1450 fps at 1000 yds with a 175 SMK out of a 26" barrel. Not exactly sure where it's going to go subsonic, but I doubt it will have the legs much more than 1200, even less with a shorter barrel. So, 20 MOA is about just right for the caliber.
