What do you think about a C15?

I've been doing a lot of research on building a AR, motivated somewhat by the cost savings, then I ran across Century's C15 selling in the 575 range. It is the A2 20in, most likely what I would build for plinking. I know the parts kit is mil-surplus with Century's stripped lower (who knows for sure who made that). I doubt I could build one any cheaper than that, and for a plinker, occasional varmit gun, it has peaked my interest.

I have read all the negative things spread across the internet about Century's "build quality" or lack of and don't doubt peoples troubles. However, this is offset by a Century CETME that I have that is a hoot to shoot. Never had a problem with it, of course I was able to hand pick mine, so I got a good one.

Does anyone out there have one of these? Has anyone seen/held/fondled one of these? If so, how is it?

My thoughts are, that if the quality is at least decent, it could be a fun plinker now, and serve as a basis to slowly update / customize as I see fit in the future?

I handled one awhile back and was not impressed. If it was me I would save up another couple hundred and buy something else. The upper and lower was very loose and the bolt had a bunch of metal ground off it. On the plus side the upper was a Colt.

The guy that bought it had to do some work on it to get the gun to fire in semi-auto mode. Last I heard he still had a single-shot.

The ar is a tightly machined weapon. Even buying all the parts and assembling a rifle will not make for an accurate weapon (most of the time)
A lot of so called mil-spec weapons are used,abused and trashed.(why else would the military get rid of it as it is still the service weapon?)
Save up some more bucks.
A great rifle for the money is RRA. Dealers buy them for about 6-700 and sell them for 8-900. They are well made,there is no guess work on the quality and the features offered are low cost compared to other brands.
Buying an assembled "factory" AR will save you from trips and waiting at the gunsmith. I have seen some assembled Ar's that shot well and didnt cost a lot to make,but most were put togher by people who had the knowledge to smith thier own weapon and correct issues. Can you?
If we were talking AK's I would say build it and have fun! But the AR is not a CETME or an AK or any other weapon. It is well made but fickle.

For not much more than the price of the Century, I built my own lower (Stag) and bought a RRA midlength upper which has most of the critical parts already put together and tested.

So I am thinking definately a NOT on the C-15. The "metal ground off the bolt" I have been finding here and on the net is probably enought to scare me off....

So......back to plan A......... looking thru the Shotgun News and various online sellers, it seems I can buy a complete upper, and a complete lower and put them together myself cheaper than just buying a complete rifle? Such as a DPMS lower in the in $210-240 range, a DPMS A2 upper for $350-400b range. I can't buy a similar DPMS for the same money can I?

Am I missing something? :confused:

You have exactly the sort of rifle I am wanting to end up with - a nice relatively stock a2 ....can you roughly break down the cost of going that route?

I think what you save is the federal taxes as long as you don't buy both pieces together. IIRC there has to be 5 days between purchases or something like that.

I built my AR-15 basic for about $640, finding a good deal at the Tanner show on a complete upper with bcg for $400 OTD from Canyon Country Tactical, bought a Superior Arms lower receiver off an ARFCOM supplier for $110 + shipping, and picked up a DPMS LPK at the Tanner for $45...

And there is no spacing required between firearms purchases...I bought an XD9 August 4th last year and then a HiPoint 995 the next day...

Also, the lower receiver is the only part considered a firearm, that has to be run with a background check...anything else no problem...

Prices may have changed a bit since I built mine in 2006, but the uppers seem to be about the same price. The total number is what sticks in my head, it was about $625 total. I'll have to check the receipt downstairs for the RRA upper, the stripped Stag lower was $75. I bought the lower components when I found a good price and took my time. I had the lower assembled for a good 6 months before I found the upper that I wanted at the price I wanted.

I've since tweaked it a bit with the Hogue pistol grip, RRA 2-stage trigger, and KNS pins.
...and $15 Imperial M-7 bayonet, just because I can. ;)

I think I will take a similar route and begin keeping my eyes open for the right deal on the right components and put her together myself.

Like Gman said, Pete at Legal Transfers is GTG and will take good care of you, not to mention his prices are about as good as they come on new uppers. Lowers.. check with Bunker1 and see what he's got on hand.

You'll really learn a lot about what makes the platform tick when you put it together yourself.

With the price of ammo these days, I'm thinking about going back to plinking with the .22 LR.;)

I have already been spending more time behind a .22 for that very reason
