Seriously you should really consider shoring that or sloping the trench. Why are you doing it? Small backhoe rental is pretty cheap.
Looks like he is already very well into the clay, and a collapse is far less likely that way...
+1. as an engineer i've experience with many large earthwork projects and safety's #1 on my jobs. shoring's a good idea with your trench, especially with the spoils placed directly on the ledge (the mass of the spoils are contributing additional force that can add to the shearing of the face below them). the cost of a couple sheets of plywood and 2x4s are cheap when compared to having it cave in on you - both in safety and having to dig it all out again.Quote:

Having foundation issues with water seepage thriugh walls.
I can save a fortune doing the excavation work myself prior to the repair and sealing work being done as that is the majority of the cost.
I am also going to install french drains to move the water out of the soil and away from the foundation walls.
That was my guess but I wasn't sure. There are drain tiles that you could install that take water away from the foundation too.
