First weekend in June I have a few days without the family.
Looking for some ideas on a 2 night backpack trip!!
Early June, so snow pack may still be deep higher without snow shoes, which I don't have yet. Maybe next season.
Either way, post up your favorite trails and camping spots. (If you wanna, I know they can be secret!)

Fourth of July mine near Nederland.
My brothers and I do the Mt Evans wilderness once a year. There's a cool little spot off trail which has the remnants of an old cabin, neatly strewn around in a pile. Firewood for the next 10 years, and nobody else seems to know its there. :-) I'm always up for some non-touristy hiking trails... preferably where there's zero chance of running into some yuppie from Boulder, out for a day hike.
Check out Lost Creek Wilderness...plenty of trails, nice hiking and views. Weather is usually decent and acess to water is plentiful. Snowpack should be minimal or nonexistent in June. Got maps and a book if you want to borrow. Can give you intel on a few trailheads.

Maroon Bells or Venable Pass.
yep, lost creek wilderness is your best bet. dry, reasonable terrain. take goose creek trail to the old cabins at the fork about five miles in. there is a nice river there you can wade in, fish in, get water, etc. from there you can hike to the old crank shaft or just around. beautiful red boulders and weird rock formations, nice rock caves and places to set up camp and the trees are plentiful but sparse enough you can actually walk through them easily to find nice views and stuff. not a terribly far drive either.
maroon bells are likely too snowy/watery that time of year. i went mid june and was wading through waist high and very fast current rivers with trees flowing down them. lets just say it wasn't pleasant. over by maroon bells there are some cool hot springs on conundrum trail but again that time of year it was rough. as the guy who we met at the hot springs said, "jesus how did you guys like that indiana jones shit?"
i wouldn't do maroon bells area til july or so. beautiful area though.
I like Difficult Campground near Aspen. Or hike and camp at Conundrum Hot Springs.

Conundrum is a fun one in the winter the only problem is you are not supposed to have fires in the sites around the hot springs, but that does not stop a lot of people from doing so.Quote:

Fourth of July trails and Indian Peaks Wilderness are great but can be overcrowded on the weekends.

Any stuff in Grand County is of interest to me. I've got a place up there and need to spend more time there.
Indian Peaks is great once you cross the divide. Before then you tend to get a lot of day hikers but last time I did a loop saw less than 10 people in 3 days

We usually take the Beaver Creek Trail and then go from there depending on what we feel up to. There are a ton of trails up there.

Couple of years ago my friends went on a dad and daughters backpacking trip on the Neversummer wilderness area. It was awesome!!! We hit Mt. Baker, Parika Pass and fished for trout in Parika lake. It rained so much that even our Jet Boil coulndt keep our fire lit. A couple of folks got tench foot because they didn't have waterproof hiking boots. Regardless, it was truly beautiful and lonely...our girls loved it.
This year we're thinking of going on a big backpacking trip near Maroon Bells or taking the Durango(?) train and hopping off to go into backcountry with our daughters.
If this is the same area I'm thinking of, it's a nice spot to get to from Denver. My kids and I went there and it's full of great day Hikes. There is a creek that runs through and we fished Brookies with a fly rod. Some trails are longer but I always bring a water pump. On the way back we usually hit bud's in Sedalia for a burger.Quote:

There is also a great trail, I think it's called the Gore Creek trail, that goes from the back of Wildernest (Silverthorn) to east vail over red buffalo pass. it is truly gorgeous and follow water which is nice. I think it hits 12,400 but not sure. Great camping spots on the way with beautiful alpine meadows. I did this one with both a dad/girls and dad/boys trip and they all loved it. There is a camping spot closer to the Wildernest trailhead near a waterfall that has a large rock outcropping that you can lay upon and have a magnificent view of the stars!!!
