on vehicles, why do they try to undersell?
example, walk into dodge dealer many years ago, 12 or so.
"looking for a 94-02 cummins, manual 4wd, extended cab" (they usually have some parked out front)
thats a heck of a truck, what are you using it for?
"towing, and work, typically will have 5-6k pounds towing across the country.
"only 5 or 6k pounds? you can do that with a 1/2 ton just fine! And why manual, the autos are so smooth!
"Because diesels eat diesels, and I want to set the cruise going over eisenhower at 70, not sitting on the side of the road with burnt trans or whipping it like a pig to get it over a pass, do you have one of the trucks I asked about or not?"

Worst part was, out of 6 places, every one wanted to sell me a 1/2ton. I asked to spend more money, why arent you taking it? And yes, that dealer, had 2 trucks that fit the bill on the lot! Pissed me off enough when I I told him Id let him know, after the test drive. "why dont you just take it home, show it to the wife, and if she doesnt like it, bring it back tomorrow" He was told "because if I come home with a truck that is more than I am wanting to spend (20k for a 12k truck), I wont be coming back, she'll come back after burying me"

I have NEVER had this happen, and have purchased 2 Cummins, and obviously shopped around. If anything, the opposite or trying to fit me into a closely, but not identically configured vehicle on the upside of the one I wanted.
