That's my favorite response from dumb people who back into people, or defend others from doing it. I once had a lady get out screaming, "DIDN'T YOU SEE US BACKING OUT?!" and slap the phone out of the hands of the old man they hit. He literally ran away from her into the Kmart to call the police. The backing vehicle always has the greater duty to yield the right of way to other vehicles, in every situation. There is no such thing as common courtesy, or letting someone in, or any of that crap.

My roommate's dad replaced his Taco bumper with a big steel monster. We helped him out, had to put the winch on it before mounting. That bastard was heavy!!

The funny part is as I was approaching I saw his truck start coming out (older Ford, not even sure there were reverse lights now that I think back) so I came to a stop. My thought was, he'll see me as soon as he turns to look because I'm in a big brown truck, tough to miss me. It was about the time I formed this thought I realized simultaneously that not only had he not seen me but was now accelerating. My first reaction was to throw it in reverse and get the hell out of the way which I did immediately & w/o thinking really. Before the truck accessed reverse he had accelerated right into me. My reaction time was probably a second or less once I realized he was backing out. He was pretty cool about it and knew he was completely in the wrong but it still doesn't make my truck any less smashed. I try to let people out when I see them even if I don't need the spot if I see them but in this case there wasn't any time. In this case it was him who never even bothered to look and now my truck is jacked up.

I feel like the bumper and fender did what they were designed to do and keep the damage superficial. If I had swapped out the beefy plate bumper I wanted (like the one on my rear) then the energy could have been transferred into my frame or even me. Stuff is designed these days to absorb impact and that's exactly what this stuff did. Looks bad but it's all superficial. I've been considering using the insurance money to get that bumper but I think about something relatively low speed like this and how it was no big deal and how that may be different if I had a stout bumper on instead. Hard to say.

The best is when you actually get it into reverse, are focused on moving out of the way, and back into the person behind you, and STILL get backed into in the front. Then you're 100% responsible for the person behind you, while the person backing is 100% responsible for your front end damages. I say one damage is better than two. Not a horrible thing that you didn't get it into reverse in time.

He had an old shitty ford with a Chrome bumper so I doubt it woulda beer canned itself. lol At best we both woulda had frame damage & neck injuries. haha

I thought the same thing after the fact. I don't think anyone was directly behind me but what if someone was, I get it into reverse and rammed into their front end and then dude safely backs out and goes on his way like nothing happened... because to him it didn't. Now I'm left standing explaining why ramming them in reverse wasn't my fault. lol
