Default Ruger SR556 or M1A SOCOM

Hey Everyone, I am going to the Tanner on Sunday, and I will be looking for one of these two rifles and I wanted to get peoples opinion. I have read up on both and I am weighing the pros and cons of both. This will be my first rifle, my very own first rifle. I am not new to shooting but I have never owned one and I am pretty excited about it. So any feedback is greatly appreciated, hope I am not opening a can of worms this being, an AR15 site, lol. So all you AR15 guys keep an open mind, thanks again everyone.

Given the choice between the two, I'd go with the socom - I looove mine! I think there are better options for the money you're going to pay on the Ruger as far as AR's are concerned. Honestly I'd jump on an AR (5.56) now and scratch some coin together for the socom later, it's nice to have both and I find myself shooting the AR a little more offten than the socom - it's cheaper and easier on the shoulder lol.

Squad Scout M1A, 18in barrel + it's cooler. I'm not sold on the piston guns, (YET)

Be ready to spend some money on ammo if you go the socom route. 308win isn't as cheap as .223

Between these two, I'd have to go with the SOCOM. I like the piston aspect of the Ruger, but I don't like that they have done things like pin the fore-end on with roll pins. I also think the Rugers are overpriced. The socom will be more expensive to feed, but it'll also hit harder. Just a choice you'll have to make. BTW, you can get mags for the socom for around $21 from 44mag.com. You can also scope the socom about as easily as the AR, you'll just need to get the scope mount for it which are available from several sources.

m14 type rifles are the best in my opinion. Personally I would go with a scout due to the fact that it doesn't take a modified gas system.

Are they ever! Somehow Ruger think that their version of the AR is so much better than everyone elses. I ain't buyin it!

I think (given the simple choice options you've given us), I'd go with the SOCOM.

OK, does anyone else find it somewhat humorous that on an AR site, out of 6 responses, 5 said go for the M14 variant and 1 was sort of ambivalent about it???
