The key here is to have someone that knows what they are doing properly fit your helmet. Most riders, left to their own devices, will choose a helmet that is 1-2 sizes too big, based on how it "feels" when they try it on for 30 seconds in a dealership. Then, when the comfort padding begins to break in, ti slides around on their head, causing chafing, and doesn't provide adequate energy absorption in an impact because their head rattles around inside like a BB in a garbage can.
I'm assuming its the same concept as dirt bike helmets.
