The only upside to having been laid off so much last year was that it sure cut our tax liability. My wife and I have had to pay in 3 of the last 5 years and it sucks. Apparantly, once you cross a certain income threshold the govt starts to punish you.

Sometimes I think a person is better off poor than middle class. If one is poor, he qualifies for all kinds of govt freebies that someone else who makes more money has to pay for on his own. Who is really better off?

Frusterates the hell out of me.

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment.
"We have 50 percent of people who are getting something for nothing," said Curtis Dubay, senior tax policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation.
Lots of folks even get back MORE than they put in. I could see not having to pay, but getting more back than you put in is the Robin Hoodism form of wealth re-distribution.

Of course, according to the esteemed (cough) Senator Harry Reid, paying taxes is VOLUNTARY.

First, you need to be aware of the Liberal Dictionary's definitition of the word "voluntary":
    vol·un·tar·y

    [vol-uhn-ter-ee]

    adjective, noun,plural-tar·ies.
–adjective 1. done, made, brought about, undertaken, etc., of one's own accord or by free choice, under penalty of law: a voluntary contribution.
    2. of, pertaining to, or acting in accord with the will of the government: voluntary cooperation.
    3. Law. a. acting or done with compulsion and obligation.
    b. done by intention to avoid prosecution, detainment and imprisonment.
    4. Physiology. subject to controlled will.

Politicians are ass-puppets whose only purpose is to be mouth pieces for those pulling their strings. Harry Reid stands tall among ass-puppets. Your definition gave me a nice chuckle.
