Because the change specifically targets semi automatic firearms, neither of which those guns are.

I'm trying to figure out what exactly is going on in New Zealand. So far I see tons of headlines basically stating that "New Zealand bans all semi auto firearms" but when I search for the actually law that has changed all I can find is that Military "Style" semi auto (MSSAs) firearms are being re-classified as class E firearms. In New Zealand you need a license to buy/posses a firearm and like Canada there are are several different licence classifications. Previously a class A license allowed you to buy pretty much all of your standard shotguns and rifles including AR15s as far as I can tell.

A class E license is now as follows:

"Allows the holder to possess and use MSSAs. Issued only to applicants showing a genuine reason for needing to use an MSSA - such as professional hunting, or participation in service-rifle or IPSC 3-gun competitions."

I don't know what the process is to get a class E license but it sounds like you just need to be an IPSC member and attend matches. In theory it sounds like they didn't really ban anything, they just re-classified them and made them more difficult to get.

The actual changes to the law:

What I find worse isn't the gun laws, but the fact that they are arresting people who have the gunman's manifesto and video. They face up to 10 years in jail.

?Taylor says he has had to turn down shoppers asking for high-capacity magazines, which enable guns to shoot far more bullets than they are designed for.?

From what I understand from the New Zealand Hunting and Shooting forum, the order in the link below was passed and will remain law until it expires in 2020 or a piece of legislation is passed by parliament to look similar and last forever. Boy some of the guys on that forum are pu****s, already getting ready to hand in their rifles and saying the gov "had to do something".

I have searched several times but can't find what weapons were used. Semi automatic rifles, shotguns and a lever action rifle. Have the specific guns been named?

If you watch the video he posted, he starts out with semi auto "tactical" shotgun with a red dot (looks like a Benelli M2 or similar) then he drops that pretty quickly and transitions to an AR with a red dot (looks like an EOTech ... and with one of those goofy California style thumbhole stocks, I believe a HERA ARMS CQR) murders a mess of people with it, goes back to the car and transitions to a second AR with a magnified optic (or maybe just an aimpoint) and same style stock (pistol grips are probably illegal in NZ). Takes a handful of long distance shots, goes back in and shoots some more (mostly shooting dead bodies at this point) comes out and gets back in the car, drives a few blocks to another mosque where he shoots at people from his car through the windshield and passenger window with a pump action shotgun ... someone shoots back at him while he's fiddling with the shotgun (either empty or malfunction, not clear) and he flees.

Sounds like NZ needs a constitution that prevents knee-jerk reactions by people emotionally effected by a particular event and possibly a dash of freedom of speech. You know, kind of like what we used to have.
