I always wonder how people go about checking when they don't actually know if they could pass. Is there a way for people to check without breaking the law to start with?

I'm not sure how to respond to that. Wouldn't you know if you had been convicted of a felony or of a Brady crime (DV, etc)?
“Every good citizen makes his country's honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but as sacred. He is willing to risk his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protection while he gives it.” Andrew Jackson

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

You'd think. I know guys that got in trouble when young and got arrested for stuff that could have been a felony, but was supposedly reduced. I don't think I'm out of line in suggesting that what someone gets told, and what record the state actually has, can be different. I've gone through, and known others who go though that kind of thing with the DMV for example. Either way, they're too scared to try.

Have yourself investigated by private party. Some PI's have a flat fee background check that should equal or surpass the CBI check.

All of these government databases should be public searchable with certain information hidden, such as SS#, drivers license #, DOB. We have the right to know what data the government has collected on us, and get it corrected if wrong.

That seems pretty straight forward. If I ever see that dude again I'll pass it along.
