    Is it going to be shot by anyone but you? If so, can they understand red means unsafe? If so, make the second color whatever the hell floats your boat.

    As was pointed out earlier, the M44US used red and green buttons for the safety. There are NO colors at all on my M1 Garands or 1903A3s or AR-15s. For that matter, the only time I ever use the mechanical safeties are when I am letting Boy Scouts use them. Otherwise, my safety is between my ears.
