It was never gonna be pretty. Leaving Afghanistan has been long overdue. I believe it was bound to be a mess anyway we look at it. Mess today, mess tomorrow or a mess next year. A slow protracted withdrawal would have still ended up with the Taliban back in control and driving Humvee's.

This was the source of the blowup between 82nd airborne commander at the airport and Brit commander leaving the airport to rescue Brit/Irish citizens and helping Afghans. 82nd commander pissed off that the Brits would endanger the agreement. I say good on the Brit commander (and French commander too).
