    Do you like small businesses?

Because I don't think you understand how that process works. Colorado for instance, requires you to file a return for each and every jurisdiction. So no, you're not collecting and remitting taxes to the State of Colorado....

Open a small "mail order" business you despise and suddenly you may need hundreds of sales tax licenses and you need to file HUNDREDS of sales tax returns just in CO, likely quarterly, much less other states. Meanwhile, your competitors (Amazon, Walmart) have that fully automated. So yeah, Walmart was lobbying for what you agree with because it's actually helpful to their online sector, as it is to Amazon. Helps limit entry of any new market competitors - whether a small business does the returns all themselves (and have no time at all left to do business) or hire a third party company to do it, they can't ever get to a place where they are competitive, because the big guys do it for next to no additional overhead at all.

I'm not sure I've ever felt like....

"You know what, some people aren't paying their fair share of 40-70 cents on the dollar to government, we need to make sure government robs every red cent it is entitled to, it's only fair!"

The additional revenues from anything always get squandered. What has marijuana taxes gone for... Schools? BAHAHAHAHAHA

I've run a small business before, and collected and remitted sales taxes. I have lost business to the mail order companies, due to the fact that they don't have to collect and remit taxes.

It's not hard to automate things. Takes some setup time etc. I don't care if it is 100s, or 1000s of different sales tax jurisdictions.

What is hard to compete against, is when one entity does not have to collect or remit sales taxes at all.

But it should all be documented somewhere. If you sell to Colorado, mainly, you will have 100 tax codes to enter.

I've done sales taxes before, and the way to do it is to automate your Point of Sale to note the sales taxes that should be paid, based on the customer location.

Then you end up with a report like:

    State of Colorado: X
    RTD: Y
    City of Aurora: Z
    Out of State: A

    etc.
APEX Gun Parts has been using Avalara in conjunction with our web site since it first became available.
They charge us for the service, but there is no practical way to do the job with office staff at the national level.
Even Avalara won't drill down to the level required by Colorado.
We do the best we can, but some municipalities don't have a process in place to do what the state mandated.
ALSO, I have noted on some AMAZON purchases tax wasn't collected and the fine print stated it was the BUYER's task to submit the proper sales taxes to the offices that collect it.

I would also like to point out that quite often these large local retail locations are given incentives to locate to the state/county/city that they are in.
These incentives usually take the form of tax breaks, both property and sales tax (the store keeps what they collect) for a specified number of years.
APEX employs about 40 people now in 2 locations, and pay taxes on 3 warehouses, I feel we are good member of the community here, SO I take negative comment's about mail order companies rather personally.

False. Zero local infrastructure or services are used to support that sale. If I bought the good in a sales tax free jurisdiction why does Denver get to tax it? Tax should be collected at point of sale, not point of delivery. Fvck greedy taxing jurisdictions. And I will never pay use tax to this undeserving state.

They wrote back with boilerplate answer (e.g. check your cookies, read our restricted item list...) I think they were mad about my ad blocking stuff. But I disabled it and was about to proceed until they said it wouldn't be sent to my area. However, I did see on their restriction page they do collect taxes in Colorado. I think maybe they written off everyone in Denver? I'm not a commie. I'm just behind enemy lines.
