Sounds like a can of worms. The PD will want answers if it is indeed stolen. Involving family could get nasty. Better to CYA though.
if you have a stolen firearm. the pd will take it and want answers, thats for sure. so then you can lie to the cops, or rat out your relative. i would probably just keep it and forget about it, or destroy it if you feel bad. just because he is or was a criminal, doesnt mean the person who paid him with it was a criminal. and even if he was a criminal, it doesnt mean the gun was stolen.
how will it impact you if you keep it? if it is stolen, who would find out? if you commited a crime and they found out it was stolen, what would make them think you knew it was stolen or that you stole it? just askin.

Yes mr thekid, the gun is stolen. so how did you get it? did you steal it? if not, where did you get it? we have ways of making you talk.
no mr thekid, the gun is not stolen. so why did you think it was? did you get this gun from your criminal phohibited person uncle? if so, we will confiscate it and call you as a witness when we prosecute your uncle.
yeah, I wasn't going to give out any info about the gun (except the serial number) or myself when talking with the cops. If I was going to keep it I wouldn't care, but I'm looking to sell it soon. Would the Colorado PD have the info on it because it came from Texas? Is there a National Stolen Firearms database?

NCIC. National crime information center. If the serial number is listed in it as stolen then a simple database search will show that. If the gun was used in the commission of a crime, well, they obviously don't know the serial number of the gun used but they may have cataloged the bullet or a spent case in NIBIN. So, it's not stolen, but it could still have a body attached to it. Probably not, but just sayin...

give them the serial number, not the gun, and tell you found it in a boating accident.

Tell pops to keep it, I would love it if someone just up and gave me a pistol, rifle, shotgun, plasma rifle in a 40 watt range. Depending on what kind it is what's the max your going to get for it? KEEP IT
