The problem isn't with fires started because the grill was left unattended while cooking, the problem with charcoal is that AFTER you finish cooking the coals are still hot enough to start a fire for quite a while. With gas or propane you shut the grill off when you're done.

As for grilling with charcoal during a burn ban, I figure if you're in your own back yard you're not likely to get caught ... unless you start a fire then expect to get raked over the coals yourself.

    so now wait a sec.
If you are getting raked over the coals, that means someone else has to violate the fire-ban to start a fire to make the coals to rake you over... right?

Default Turn your gas grill into a smoker grill

Take a 3#coffee can, use a pair of tin snips to cut the can down to about 2 inches tall . Fill with wood chips of your choice( hickory, mesquite etcadd water, let it soak for about an hour. Set the can on the volcanic rock.Preheat your grill until wood chips start smoking. Gives whatever your cooking a wonderful flavor uuuum...

PS.. Cut down more than one can, use different flavored wood chips to give your guests more choices
PSS.. you could also use a metal pie pan or small shallow metal square pan. I use the coffee can cause i'm a cheapskate.
    Happy fourth to all
