"Al Qaeda had better benefits than Wal-Mart. Although at Wal-Mart, you get to wear your vest more than once." -- Stephen Colbert
I think it's a game that Iran should be very careful about. It's all fun and games until a sub sinks your crappy middle-eastern ship.
I don't see this as a threat against the US. I do see this as a problem within the US... this would not be happening with any other president (except for maybe Carter). The Iranians aren't complete idiots, they know that there's still a rifle behind every blade of grass in America... they fear the American people. They do not, however, fear the current administration, and aren't afraid to show this disrespect because they know our gov't won't do anything.
Now that said, if the Iranians are lucky, they'll make it about halfway before they run out of fuel... AFAIK, they don't have the capability to replenish/refuel while underway.
This is nothing more than a propaganda maneuver. They know that if they actually try anything, we'll put them back to the days before Persia existed. However, by simply sitting 13 miles off the coast (I believe we consider 12 miles of ocean as our sovereign territory right?) they can print headlines for their people that read along the lines of:
INVINCIBLE PERSIAN FLEET SAILS AGAINST DEMANDS OF AMERICAN WARLORD!
It's like talking smack to a gorilla at a zoo. Outside the cage you can say whatever you want.
turnabout is fair play, we should park a carrier group off their waters.
A lot of talk on the radio about how close they are to nukes and have improved their delivery systems. It's not like we have to worry but just think of what Israel and even Europe have to live with. A nut job pointing a loaded gun at you.

I wouldn't worry about Israel. They're not afraid to take an aggressive approach to things like we tend to be.
Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Israel has some subs of its own... if one of em were to come out here and turn one or a few of the Iranian ships into artificial reefs, Israel would be almost entirely off the radar and would have some plausible deniability being "so far from home" and all.
