Driving 112 and volunteering plans to murder? He'd really fallen off the edge. It sounds like there was a kernel of light left in that he was doing things to get caught. I'm so glad it ended without bloodshed.
I think the intensity of the media coverage has attractions to these borderline cases. How else can a loser become famous? I'd guess these people lack any kind of moral center.
I turned off TV coverage of these horrors after Columbine. It goes on day after day but there aren't many facts so it just gets unhinged. About day 3 or so I noticed it had become a how-to. Like they were giving lessons for the next whacko.
I'd love to see some sort of limit on the coverage. After all the facts are gathering some imposing type could go on the air, an Old Testament Walter Cronkite and say, "James Eagan Holmes - cursed be his name! May it never be uttered again. May all pictures of him be destroyed and may he be forgotten for all time."
I doubt if the media would voluntarily do this but boycotts could motivate them. That would cut down on copycats.
