I'm probably older than most on this forum, so I remember as a kid being glued to the TV and watching shitty grainey black & white coverage of him step off the ladder of the lunar module... "I'm going to step off the LEM now... That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
The Mars landing was cool as was the shuttle but to me a human on on the moon, was just vastly more thrilling.
A true American hero and a great man. Rest in peace.
Mars is entirely inhabited by robots.
Like Robb, I watched all of that stuff live as it happened. Especially intense as I was living on an AFB at the time. I had the models... the maps... the flight plans... THE WORKS.
As for me, you can just forget all of that 'One Small Step' stuff. After holding my breath for what seemed to be a freakin' eternity, fearing that they had most certainly expended all of their fuel in seeking a good landing site, when I heard a familiar voice over the static pronounce, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." THAT was when I knew that a man... an American... Neil Armstrong... had truly reached the moon. Refusing to be "spam in a can" and not following the NASA script but still getting the job done... my kinda' guy.
Still can't quote it without getting a bit choked up.
May God Hold & Keep You, Neil Armstrong.

Yup! Everything in school stopped and we gathered around the TV to watch (more like listen cuz it was hard to see, no big-screen plasmas then!)
I had a few acquaintances that had grown up with the Commander, and they all attest to the quality of his character! They said he'd love to "buzz over" the town when he happened to be flying 'nearby'! Where have guys like this all gone to?
