Ruger LCR .357/CT

I trying to help my mom find a concealed carry. I sent her to G & G Guns in Lakewood to look at the Ruger LCR .38. She was talked into a LCR .357.. She is really petite and weak and more fragile then average but I figured she could just fire .38s at the range. This was back in January and now its near the end of April and no revolver. She has called a few times to inquire but gets "The person that does the ordering will call you back" and then no call. So I called yesterday and was told that there is a problem with the .357/CT, the frame is cracking.. They offered to get her into something else.

1. I have searched the internet trying to find out anything about this and have found nothing recent.. Anyone have any info about this?

2. If I suggested for her to get something else, what should I suggest?

1 No matter how good the reputation of the gun or manufacture there can always be a bad gun in a batch

2 Did she actually shoot the 38? If she was too frail to shoot that effectively I'd look at something like a pk380 or ppk in 32. If she shot the 38 and liked the platform, a 642 is a classic.

I would like to get a timeline if I were to decide to suggest to her that she stay with this gun. Is the delay is due to recall/problem? Are they covering due to the fact that they messed up and the weapon is fine?

If anyone knows Warren and feels they can get the straight scoop (timeline) or verify that the delay is due to problems with the weapon or just backorder due to the panick...I would appreciate it.. I am a understanding person. They said they do not offer refunds at the point of sale...

She fell in love with the fricken look of the Ruger LCR (can't say I blame her) so I have been scouring for the all black (matte) and what she calls "classy" look... in a small revolver, she does not want a semi.. I like the 642 as well and she has fired it and liked it but did not like the the look so I am looking at the 442 as we speak.... ughhh..

If she's too frail to shoot a revolver, Putting her in to a semi auto is foolish, if not outright dangerous..

Call ruger and ask them. i doubt anyone here can answer a MFG issue other than the mfg.

Funny...Maybe frail was to strong of a word... I was trying not to type thats she is a wuss.. She broke her foot trying to kick me.. She has fired my G22, it just hurts her wrist..

You think the recoil from any semi is greater than a lightweight snub?

In the case of my mother it comes down to how fat and cushioned the grip is spreading the recoil over a larger area of her hand which makes a revolver better for her based on what I have tried so far..

Don't worry, that wasn't directed at you in the least. Some people think that the primary factor in defensive shooting is simply being able to make the weapon function (racking the slide) and then put lead down range, in as powerful a package as possible.

I'm a revolver guy and I love them, but if I take my 337 to the range and shoot 50 rounds my wrists are in a bit of discomfort, if I shoot 100 my palms will ache and my wrists beg me to stop. For some people it's like that after the first round and they will never like a light weight 38 snub. Likewise if I take one of my glocks (what can I say, I like simple guns) I can shoot the 20 or 27 'till kingdom come without any pain but it does take more strength/effort to manipulate it than an revolver. That being said the 337 is my favorite gun to carry when I'm in the springs despite the recoil (if I have to go up to Denver I do prefer my 23).

I think a pk380 or ppk 32 (not a 380 due to reliability issues) are good guns for the recoil sensitive because you get a effective round that is low recoil in a package that weights about 22 ounces. Some people claim that that the 32 or 380 anemic but they have been used effectively for many years, and in fact considered to be very powerful at the time of their creation.

Personally I think a 38 or 357 revolver is a great package for new shooters (snubs for CC, something a bit bigger for range time fun). +p or 357 loads are available if you want, or you can down load to a plain 38 special or even a 38 long colt. Simple operation and plenty accurate to get the job done for most people.

Most importantly is if your mother likes the 38/357 package, shoots it well, and has confidence in it then that is all she needs. It will be hard to find a replacement right now be it ruger or S&W, but that's just the nature of the beast.

Thanks.. I think when I call Ruger and find out (what I already know) that there is not a problem... I will just have her wait for it to come in.. When I take everything into account including her opinion, the LCR .357 using the .38 at the range and .357 as the carry rounds is the best option.. Watching her rack a round with a w/.380 is pathetic.. Even funnier watching try to do it with my G22..


All in all... I am happy to see her interest and how well she has progressed... Thanks for helping me think this through some more and I am still open for more thoughts..
