I'm not a lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....
It is my understanding that a STATE ISSUED temporary ID, whether it be a Driver's License, or just a State ID card, carries the same weight as a "permanent" state issued form of identification - and it must be honored by law enforcement as such (state level on down - does not apply to the Feds). We honored them on my base (AF) when I played cop - BUT we also required another form of photo identification.
With this said, a valid photo ID of some sort is always a good thing to have on your person. While it may not necessarily be "required", it could sure save a lot of time and questions to verify your identity, should a situation come to that.
