Help me plan/purchase my first LR build/buy

For what it's worth, I have a friend in NM who upgraded to a Savage 10BA in .308 with a Shepherd BDC Scope.
We regularly shoot the silhouettes out to 500 meters down at the Whittington Center, and it gets rather boring with his setup.
When new shooters, often women, are with us, he puts them behind the rifle and they make first shot hits 9 out of 10 times all the way out to 500.

ETA: He's a 5'7" lefty.
