Since my wife is always needing extra space for her spices, I decided it was time to buy her a safe to keep all that oregano and basil fresh as long as possible. I chose to go with the Bighorn 19ECB sold through Costco. They were offering a $200 off coupon and free shipping, so for just under $600 for a "24 gun" safe I couldn't lose. Just think of how many spice jars it could hold! Now my wife will have some more room since she filled up her Zanotti ZA-III.
From reading other people's experiences online about buying through Costco, I mistaken believed that I would be able to have Rhino switch out the stock electronic lock with a dial prior to them shipping it. That was a no go. I guess they don't do it anymore. Rhino did say they could send someone to the house and for some amount north of $100 (can't remember exactly what it was) they could switch it for me, but I passed.
The safe arrived in about two weeks which was much faster than I had expected. Redway dropped it in my garage. I was concerned about moving the 400lb safe to my basement so I did a lot of research online and called some moving companies to find a solution. One quote was $350 and the cheapest quote I had was for $140 considering it was a "2 hour job, minimum." I didn't like either of these answers. Lots of gun boards had members move such a small safe easily with a appliance dolly and some buddies, so that's what I did. It took all of $16 for the dolly rental and about 10 minutes for me and three other guys to place it safely in my basement with no injuries or mishaps.
As far as my thoughts on the safe, It seems sturdy enough. I do NOT like the electronic lock. Feels far to flimsy. However, still think the purchase was a very good value. Unfortunately, it looks like many others thought this was a good deal and now Costco is sold out.
