As everyone talks about being prepared, I think that it is a good thing to have simple options in case you ever get stuck in the middle of something like this. One piece of preparedness is to replace your shoe laces with para cord. It comes in handy for many great uses, including tourniquets, which would have come in very handy in that situation.
