New from Montana

Howdy All
Just married a Denver girl and had to move from BFE Montana. Not happy about Denver yet, but looking forward to discovering Colorado's wild places. I train pointing dogs, shoot IDPA and some 3 gun when I'm not ice climbing or roping steers.

In MT I'm used to shooting 5 minutes from house IDPA handguns and rifle out to about 800m with unlimited dog training areas. I can't find anyplace around here to shoot (really shoot) and run dogs wide open. Any suggestions would be welcome!

not much close other than some indoor ranges and cherry creek. There are a few decent places out west of town. Check out the forums, especially Places to Shoot.

gotta get out of the city- Colorado Springs was too big for me, so I found acreage just north of Penrose (just under 47 acres on my lot, 3 empty lots next door)

I have 3 dogs currently (had 4 until a couple months ago, no fences (just train them to stay on our property... works pretty well so far, and makes for very happy dogs..)

it was apparently too crowded here for me, tho- early this year I bought a 13 acre lot out off Copper gulch road, because it borders a BLM WSA (over 16,000 acres of untouched wilderness), and because it was only $16,000

we're close to Ft. Carson, and many established neighbors have setup their own shooting ranges- never heard of any complaints about shooting around here...

at any rate, I'm still a noob, but I'll still welcome you to the site- and congrats to your marriage- going on 19 years married for me (and I'm only 38)

M4Fundi, Good luck on finding a good place close to Denver for shooting at those distances. There's some areas out East but you'll have to drive a bit. Some of the Sporting Clubs out East also have dog training areas and that will cost you, The best places are usually private. You can do like me and drive to Nebraska or Kansas and train while you hunt!

Welcome! What part of Montana are you from? I lived in Great Falls for about 7 years and loved every minute.

If you get over to Chaffee county stop by and try out our range. For a public range it is real nice. We have 3 pistol ranges, a rifle range out to several hundred yards, 60 or 70 steel targets out at various distances on the rifle range and a shotgun range. The NRA even bought us a concrete outhouse. How cool is that?

Plus we have a real nice gun shop in town just up from McDonalds.

The only down side is we have liberals and socialists out the wazoo and no open season on them. So if you come to visit you have to promise to take a commie back with you.

I moved from Park County. The gateway to Yellowstone and Fly Fishing Capitol of the lower 48. Flyfishing was actually great right in town.

I'm not really interested in long range shooting right now, but prefer to shoot IDPA right now to get the wife better with a handgun. So, I'm looking for an area near Lakewood that we can set up IDPA target stands for COFs and I can teach her the handgun and shotgun right now.

I will need to find some areas to run pointing dogs in the near future tho and need some real big room to run.
