So you actually got pulled over at 170? Or stopped at the roadblock?

When i lived in Vegas i rode with SinCitySportbikes. They had a trip planned to head to Death Valley from Vegas and spend the day riding the 90+ mph sweepers through the Valley. In winter it is actually tolerable for temperatures there. Well, I got a late start that morning and missed the main group, as did one other guy. So we took off to try to catch up with them. Headed out of Vegas towards Pahrump and hung a left on some no name road heading to Death Valley. We werent racing or anything, just trying to catch up. And in NV all the roads outside of town are nothing but straight lines for literally miles. I could see where this road curved about 15 miles from where we were. And the speed just started climbing.

So here I am, tucked down relaxing and cruising. Not really paying attention to how fast I am going. I see in the distance a car coming towards us. I am keeping an eye on it. Thinking I am good since I don't see a light bar. About the time the antennas on the trunk become visible the grill lights up like a Christmas tree. Damn, cop. I roll off the throttle, sit up and turn into a sail and look down at the speedo. 165 at that point. Considering I had already come off the throttle, became an air brake the fact I was seeing 165 meant I was traveling over 170 mph when the lights started flashing. The other guy and I were pulled over, our leathers off, licence and registration out and waiting for about a minute or two before the cop got turned around and parked behind us.

I was not about to run from the cops. I don't like Chris Rock, but he does have it right about that. If you run from the Cops they are bringing an ass whooping with them.

End result the cop wrote us for 110 in a 70. I got it lawyer-ed down to 180 bucks and a parking ticket.

When I was working the roads I never was "nice" and wrote a lower speed. It's falsifying a government document doing so. I know some cops do it to be "more friendly", but screw that...I left it up to the person if they wanted to go to court and the lawyers to plea it down. Just wasn't worth it to me.

31 MPH over is Reckless Endangerment in NV and it means vehicles are impounded and people wear bracelets. He may not have wanted to deal with that, or he may not have gotten any lazer or radar on us and was taking a swag. He didn't ask how fast we were going, we didn't say. He yelled at us about racing and wrote the ticket. Honestly I have no idea how good a radar signal you could get on two bikes coming at you while you are driving 70 and they are driving 170 for a closing speed of 240 mph, and getting a read on speed when they are oncoming like that is a bit tricky as well.

Just an FYI: The radar detectors only pick up radar signals if a law enforcement officer is using the radar detector. If a LEO is using Lidar, your radar detector won't pick up the signal. Radar is a big cone shapped beam and Lidar is a small straight beam. The only way a radar detector will pick up Lidar is if the LEO aims it at the windshield and hits the detector (which we don't aim it there).

I couldn't even begin to count the number of tickets I wrote to people with "good" radar detectors. If you wanna know you're about to get a ticket, a radar detector is a great tool.

Change the name to ticket detection device then? HAHAHA, that's hilarious! I have my V1 and it's done good about warning me to traps, other than that it's basically a "You're about to get pulled over" detector. But I haven't been pulled over in about 3 years (again, knock on wood).

I've been known to follow people for substantial distances along Hwy 285 in the middle of the night with the little red and green lights of the detector (usually mounted on the windshield underneath the mirror) clearly visible through the back windshield. It's fun to hang back a ways as their speed is around 15 or 20 over and tap the trigger on the radar gun for just a "blip" of energy. The detector in the cars would light up like a Christmas tree, the driver would slow down until he thought it was "safe" and the speed would gradually creep back up. Tap the radar again and repeat. It was great fun...especially explaining how I'd been following them for several miles.

There are some things I miss about law enforcement.
