Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to Fight, he'll just kill you.
interesting thoughts. I've been considering the idea of a BOB not so much on the idea that if something like "Red Dawn" were to happen I would be making my way into the hills, but rather was considering it based on actual need to have a bag packed that might be useful while in the truck on a long road trip, or a camping trip, or some other event...
As I live in an apartment and I'm fairly close to Denver at this point in time, I have no personal feelings of security with either the community I live in or the security of my home...it's nowhere near secure from any real type of threat. The most I could say is, I'd like to have a way to throw something in the truck that's useful in most any situation should I need to make a quick exit.
Besides, everything I can think of that's useful for a BOB to go is also useful gear to have in general should a disaster strike and I need to hunker down in what I have, I think.
So, let's look at it from a different direction. Instead of a BOB, what's a list of items that's in your war chest for when the SHTF and you hunker down where you are? Also, what sorts of preparations would you want to make?
You guys in the city are screwed
Carry some water, warm clothes, food, 10 essentials and fuel in you car enough to get home. Without a retreat and several years worth of food, you are wasting time. Shelter in place. I carry a bug out bag in my care so I can stay alive if I run off the road in winter. Other than that, I prep at home.

Westy has the right idea. It's a G.H.B. - Get Home Bag. Less than 1/10th of 1% of us have the skill to live out of a backpack for more than 3 days. My bag weighs 40+ pounds and is designed to allow me to GET HOME period. Yes I have shelter/food/fire starting/ammo/medical/fishing/cold gear/brandy(yes please)/blah, blah blah...but it is only there so that I can get home in 3-5 days as it seems every time I'm out of town some s**t happens. I have traveled nation-wide as much as every 2 weeks for most of the year and I do take things with me every time to make that "long walk home" possible, including having my luggage be a snowboarders bag that converts into a backpack - you just never know. I was in Las Vegas on 9/11 and had to drive home - so yes it does happen.
I have 3-4 day pack to get me to a FEMA camp
