It's a tough spot, no doubt.
But here's the problem LE has... The statists have said we must be disarmed because the police can protect us better than we can protect ourselves. Think about the burden that puts on LE. It will open up every situation to intense scrutiny, because, lets face it: that poor women could have done a much better job protecting herself than the officer who shot her in the head.
And, as we all know, being in NY puts people at a disadvantage against violent crime because disarmament incentivizes crime. Which means there is an increased need to receive safety from LE/gov.
If an officer shows up for work, he is accepting this responsibility. I wouldn't want any part of it...
I don't feel bad for him. He made a decision, didn't perform as well as the situation dictated and now a young woman is dead and he has to suffer the consequences. It's a crap situation but doesn't mean I need to have to sympathy for the guy.
Everyone was put into a bad situation by a criminal. The officer may have made a bad decision. I wasn't there so I don't know. The scumbag and a "justice" system that let him, a violent, repeat criminal, out of prison to terrorize society is the ultimate place where blame should be placed. It's just unfortunate that the victim had to pay with her life and an officer is going to have pay with his/her career (and more) because of it.

Don't wanna get shot by the police?
"Stop Resisting Arrest!"
Poor cop? Really? Are you trolling? Maybe I'm abnormal, but I think the loss of the girl's life is the key issue; and I'm sure her loved-ones don't consider the situation "unfortunate", nor do most college girls think about arming themselves.

Who said "poor cop" besides RedDog? And he was being sarcastic in case you missed it.
Why is wrong to feel sympathy for the officer for the situation he was placed into in addition to the victim? I seriously doubt he's OK with what happened.
Once again, the membership doesn't disappoint. Happens like clockwork any time an incident like this happens.

As my sense of sarcasm is lost on you, let me put this in simple terms; it was directed at the OP. Read again in case you missed it.
It is not for us to judge the circumstances of what happened, because we we not there and do not know the full details; but it is automatically assumed its a "poor cop" (at least as I read the OP).
As some have already noted; I have witnessed too many times that people have jumped on the "bash cops" bandwagon (revert back to my trolling comment). We must have an abundance of LE/SOF members, because the AAR's just pile in after 10 minutes of a news report.
In my opinion, the loss of the life of the girl is paramount right now. And the only true person to blame is the fuckhead who started this mess...
