Honestly, don't. Get a good 3-5 matches under your belt and then consider alternatives. All trigger time is good time and there are so many forms of competition, one will certainly meet your tastes.

IDPA is certainly the cheapest of the action sports, but it is not the easiest. I just think it is cool to see new people get out to matches and then continue on. We have some top shooters here in CO that started with a CCW course and/or an IDPA match and are now winning higher level matches. The people are generally some of the best as well, but shooters do like to encourage new people to spend more and more on the hobby/obsession.
