anyone know where to get 2x4 target stands with just the one center slot for the 2x4 at a reasonable price? many online are dang expensive.

This is what I make, they're durable enough to withstand many bullet hits, and also sturdy enough to stand up to the winds. They're short enough (4 ft.) so that the bullets impact the berms nice and low to avoid ricochets.

The upright frames are 48" tall, the top piece is 24", the bottom crosspiece is 21". From three 2x4's, you can make two upright frames with only 6" of scrap leftover. I mount a 24" square piece of heavy cardboard with screws. I can staple my targets to the cardboard easily, and also replace the shot-up cardboard easily. These frames fit into my own wooden base and will also fit the steel bases out at Ben Lomond Gun Club.

The uprights fit right into the base, it's a 2-piece arrangement for easy transport and you can replace the shot-up frames without replacing the base. Very simple and easy, but may not be car-trunk-friendly. I don't have the dimensions handy for the base, but the frame is 24" wide so the base needs to be 24" wide. I believe the base legs are 36", for stability in the wind.

(NOTE) - These photos are of an earlier version that used two 21" crosspieces. I've since switched to using a 24" crosspiece across the top of the uprights, instead of between them. Just a little more stable, and leaves less scrap wood to throw away. Either way works fine.
