    Default Anyone's Neighbor...

    ...dead?

    http://denver.cbslocal.com/2013/06/1...e-tree-stumps/

AURORA, Colo. (AP) – Police say one man has died after an accident while trying to remove tree stumps in Aurora, and another is injured.

Police say a man was using a tow strap connected to a vehicle to pull stumps from the front of a house Monday when the strap disconnected from the stump. The tow strap’s hook shot through the vehicle’s rear window and struck the driver in the back of the head. The vehicle then traveled across the street onto a front porch, striking an elderly man who was sitting there.

Police say the driver was pronounced dead at a hospital. The man on the porch was taken to a hospital but is expected to survive.

Police say they don’t expect to pursue charges.

    WTF are you calling drunken!!!

The old jacket/blanket trick was for wire cable/chain/straps to cause a damping effect in the event of failure. Modern winch rope releases energy differently.

Even with good quality gear, you should still throw a jacket, or something over the middle of the line to deaden it, if there is a failure

Ah man! I so feel for those involved as this was an accident that ended a life and no second chances, also solidifies the line: "Live each day as if it was your last." Hug your kids and wife every morning just because.

    It can be that simple.

Back in my early hard core wheeling days, (always a off road enthusiast) I saw this picture below, got rid of my metal cable on the winch, chains for recovery, and the cheap cheap brand tow straps with the hooks sewn in. Went straight high end synthetic rope modern and wont whip back at you. The old heavy bag over the line doesn't always work either.

(That isn't even a metal line. Imagine your head in the drivers seat.)

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles. --Jeff Cooper"

They were doing this in Pueblo West a few years ago. The ball on the hitch broke off, the nylon strap with the ball attached hit his 10 year old son in the head killing him instantly.
