I think stuff like this contributed to my aversion to sports while I was in school. Everyone held sports and athletes on such a pedestal that it really turned my off from most sports.

From the villagers point of view it sounds like the townspeople rallying their "upstanding" athletes.
Reminds me of that gang rape in Ohio, where law enforcement and town folk tried to sweep their star athletes rape of a girl under the rug.
If that sentence doesn't end with "..out of a cannon," then it's not an acceptable ending for the story.

Rule of law is a joke...
This isn't the first that I have heard of this, it is however the first that I can remember where the entire town turned against the victim. When I wrestled in HS, the "initiation" was red belly from the team. It was pretty painful but not too bad. I remember another team (in another State) deciding that sodomizing with a broom handle was a much better idea. After that happened, we were all threatened with expulsion if there were any signs of hazing. Freaking amazing.
