Tell you what: I had my fair share too, but I feel that , for those of us who carry, and are able bodies, it is not a bad advice.
I for one would not mind polishing the few skills I have, so I will ask the same question, this time seriously: anybody cares to suggest a discipline that would have helped in this scenario so that Z would have not had to use deadly force?

Yep ... the real lesson here is to make sure you live where there are no black people. Because there's a chance that one of them might be a criminal and if they attack you and you use legitimate self defense you're screwed.

In Zimmys case he probably could have avoided the entire situation by observing and reporting and walking away.
Which according to testimony is what he did, only to have Martin step out from behind a bush and escalate the situation. At that point avoidance is not an option.
If testimonies are true I feel Zimmerman exhibited reasonable restraint of employing his weapon until he was on his back with somebody bigger, younger and stronger than him curb bouncing his head.
Avoidance was not an option at that point as well.

None of us really know what happened but there are times when one can take reasonable means to avoid problems but sometimes problems come to you. Then you cannot avoid the shit.
