BRIGHTON, Colo. — An emergency water meeting was scheduled in Brighton Wednesday afternoon due to reports that water in the area tested positive for E. coli.
A Tier 1 alert was issued, which requires the city of Brighton to notify all users within 24 hours.
The county health department has also warned residents and restaurants in the community to take sanitation measures including boiling their water and using paper plates. However, there is no indication that people should boil water on the city’s website.
Some residents told FOX 31 they have received calls instructing them not to drink the water because it is contaminated with E. coli.
Platte Valley Hospital is taking precautions to treat anyone who might become sick with the bacteria, and is already handing out bottled water. The hospital said they have not admitted any patients with symptoms of E. coli.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Escherichia coli (E. coli) normally lives in people’s’ intestines, and most E. coli is harmless. However, some forms of the bacteria can cause illness.
The emergency meeting is being held at Brighton’s city hall at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
