For starters it seems as though it leaves a LOT of juice as the pulp I removed was very wet still so you're wasting a lot of your veggies & fruit which means wasting money as well.

I'm planning to return this juicer but will probably keep it until the one I order shows up. After some research it appears as though the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Juicer is a good bargain for the price tag. It runs $59.99 w/free shipping via Walmart & Amazon so I'll probably order from Amazon to avoid paying tax. It has a more powerful motor than the LaLanne and has done quite well in the reviews that I've read. It does a pretty solid job of out performing juicers that cost quite a bit more so I'm confident I will be happy with this once it arrives.
The Jack LaLanne is a shitty juicer. It's quiet, ant that is the only good thing about it (it is better than nothing however). The Hamilton beach juicer is all you need. You don't need the expensive ones. The only draw back to the Hamilton Beach is the sound, friggen thing sounds like a jet engine, but, at least you know it's working!

I think you'll like the Big Mouth juicer. It's what we picked up and it's performed well over the last couple of days. I don't see any issues coming up unless it just up and dies.
The big mouth is what we've been using for a year now. Still working for us! Well.... still working for the wife anyway! (I haven't juiced in quite some time)

So the HB Big Mouth is quite a bit louder than the LaLanne then huh?

We've been using the Magic Bullet ($50 at Target) for about a month for making the juices. It's basically a blender but whatever you put in is completely smooth when done. Juicers remove a lot of pulp (fiber) which IMO is a waste since it keeps your intestines nice and clean.

Also, most of our juices have about 50% leafy greens like spinach, kale, collard greens. These are surprisingly loaded with protein. Also sunflower seeds and some nuts make a great protein source and also add some important fatty acids.

the idea that pasteurization destroys nutrients has been debunked, but for some reason some people perpetuate that myth. in things like orange juice it can decrease the vitamin C content slightly, but it is insignificant. its kind of like the people that say immunizations cause diseases and all this mumbo jumbo. it has been investigated by many sources many times and is completely untrue. some so called "nutritionists" will say pasteurization destroys nutrients but there is no evidence of this.

That's why I got the Low Sodium version thinking that it tastes pretty bland by comparison I should be alright. Wrong! I drank quite a bit too as my body was liking the change of pace since I generally ingest salty and spicy foods versus sweet and plain foods. Ultimately, anything that can be kept at room temperature for long periods of time isn't healthy for the most part. Since they pasteurize the ingredients the nutrients and vitamins are 'dead' which most claim isn't as healthy for you either and your body doesn't readily receive and process them the same. Making your own juice from fresh fruits and veggies is always mo betta.

The LaLanne juicer isn't that bad and I know that 15 years or so it was the juicer to have. My buddy had one and as I recall they were about the best and only juicer you could buy. Things have obviously come a long ways since then and the juicers today are just better where, other than minor changes, I think the LaLanne juicer has remained largely unchanged. I think they rely on their name and existing business agreements to sell units now whereas some of these other newer models have to rely more on producing a better product. It also seems like the idea that you have to pay $250-$300 to get a quality juicer is being challenged which I thoroughly enjoy. I can't wait to see if the $60ish HB juicer is going to meet all of my needs.

Seems like fresh salsa is the equivalent to juice, and it certainly provides a different taste, and even some spice if that's what you are looking for Jer. I eat fresh pico right out of the bowl all the time. I bet on a juice diet it'd be like a delicacy to be eating something that you almost have to chew.

Anybody know where I can buy a DVD of "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead"? I watched it online, but I want the wife to watch it too and she won't do it online, but she'd watch it on the TV. And I'd like to have the DVD anyway.

Also, any good books on the subject?

<edit>Just went back to page 1 and found the link to Rebootwithjoe.com.

That's not what I like to hear. A little birdie told me that the Walmart near us is getting one in tonight and my wife id going to pick it up in the morning on her way to work in the morning. I liked how I could juice while watching TV the other night. I just had to turn the volume up a few clicks.

But what you're doing is blending. A juicing diet is very specific and you can't eat the pulp/fiber of the fruit as it defeats the purpose. You don't want your digestive system working as that's not the point. Once I'm done with the juice fast I may use the pulp for all sorts of things but for now I'm not eating it. Same reason I can't just eat an apple or a carrot.

I never said it destroyed anything. I simply stated that some said the nutrients might not be as good. I never said I wasn't going to drink it because of this though.. just that I wanted to juice fresh fruit and veggies to get fresh nutrients. Fruit and vegetables begin to break down as soon as you cut them and the nutrients suffer. I have a hard time believing these same fruits can be juiced, processed, pasteurized, made into juice and bottled up and stored and have the same nutritional value as the same veggies & fruits fresh. It doesn't need to be a debate I was simply saying I would rather have fresh and in my limited experience you can really taste the difference.

As good as that sounds it still won't work. You have to have juice and water and nothing more in the juice fast. If you chew it it's not adequate for the diet. Loves me some pico w/jalapeno though.

    Day 3

    Starting Weight: 293.5
    Previous Weight: 289.5
    Current Weight: 288.0

I expected the V8 that I had yesterday to slow down my progress but it apparently didn't. My only problem so far has been some mild hunger which is really my fault. I need to juice once more a day and that problem would go away.

My energy levels have been normal to better than normal and I've felt good overall.

I've stuck to the Mean Green recipe with the addition of half a jalapeƱo for a very, very mild kick but it's changed up the flavor enough that I won't get tired of this recipe. I've thought about changing up my juice but a lot of what I see is more fruit based and I'd prefer to stay away from the sugar.

That's why I asked since that's the difference in the two models for $10. The only negative reviews I could find on this juicer were that those can break with normal usage even by those who know and were trying to be careful. It seems as though that weak link was addressed with these metal straps and to me that's worth $10. My local stores have neither one in stock so since I have to order one I might as well get the updated version. I think functionally they're identical though so hopefully you don't have any problems with those. If not, it sounds like you'll be happy with that juicer.
Hey Jer could you tell me what you take in per day juice / water. What types of juices and how much. Thanks you have inspired me to get healthy.
