Default CRC .22LR Steel Dogs Match Second Sunday of the month

The CRC .22LR Steel Dogs Match will take place every second Sunday of the month (weather permitting) at 9:00am at the Colorado Rifle Range located near Byers, CO.

We will be engaging ten steel prairie dog targets measuring approximately 6” high by 2.5” wide and three larger plates at distance ranging from 35 yards to 200 yards in five separate strings of fire. On all five strings the shooters will begin the course of fire in the prone position with their rifle loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds and the rifle's action closed.

We will have two separate divisions: Scoped Rifle (no magnification limit*) and Open Sights (post & notch or peep sights).
*If you are looking at your target through a piece of glass (i.e. 1X Scope or Red Dot), you are shooting in the Scoped Rifle division.

The cost of this match is only $10 per rifle. You may shoot up to a total of two rifles but one must be scoped and the other an open sights rifle.

    ______________________________________________
String No. 1: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in ascending order with one round each. The targets will be set at: 35yd (35pt), 50yd (50pts), 65yd (65pts), 80yd (80pts), 90yd (90pts), 100yd (100pts), 110yd (110pts), 120yd (120pts), 135yd (135pts) and 150yd (150pts). You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets. If you hit your intended target, you will get their assigned point value; if you miss it or if you hit a target out of order, you just don't gain any points (no penalty for misses).

String No. 2: On signal, the shooter will engage 10 targets in descending order with one round each. Starting with the 150yd target and ending on the 35yd target. You will have a maximum of 3 minutes to engage all targets.

String No. 3: On signal, you must hit all 10 targets in ascending order. If you hit your intended target with your first shot, you get its full point value. If you don't hit it on your first shot but you hit it on the second shot, you receive 50% of the points. If you don't hit it on the second shot and you hit it on the third shot, you receive 25% of its value. If you don't hit your intended target on your third shot (or if you skip it), you will not receive that target's points value and you must continue shooting the next farthest target. You can bring to the line as many magazines as you deem necessary but each magazine can only be loaded with a maximum of 10 rounds each. You will have a maximum of three minutes for this string of fire.

String No. 4: On signal, you will have one minute to rack up as many points as you can. You can engage the targets in any order you like but you can only engage each target once. If you hit it on your first shot, you get the target's full point value. If you miss it, you must engage a different target. Whether you hit or miss, you cannot engage the same target a second time.

String No. 5: With a maximum of ten rounds loaded in your magazine, you will engage one target at 165 yards (165pts), another at 185 yards (185pts) and one at 200 yards (200pts). You can engage these targets in any order you want and, if you miss, you may continue shooting at them until you have either hit them or your ten rounds have been shot. Once you have hit a target, you will get its point value but you cannot engage the same target again. There is no time limit. The maximum amount of points you can earn on this string is 550 points.

After a long hiatus and with the help of Mark P. and other shooters, we will once again renew the .22LR Steel Dogs Match in a new venue.

This coming Sunday, July 14, 2013 we will meet at the 200 yards berm on the East Ranges at the Colorado Rifle Club. This is a test match and, if everything goes well, we plan to continue hosting this match on this location every second Sunday of the month (weather permitting).

Since we will need to figure out the placement of the targets, we might not begin shooting the match until after 9:30am. Nonetheless, I will ask you to please show up early so we can all help with the setup.

We don't have any shooting benches at this location; we will all be shooting prone (or standing or kneeling if you prefer). If you have a portable shooting bench that you would like to bring, please feel free to do so but only if you are willing to allow other shooters to shoot off your bench too. Shade is also limited; if you have a portable canopy, please bring it with you. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and copious amounts of sunscreen.

    See you all on Sunday!

Today's match was a blast (though I will admit that shooting a .22LR projectile at 200yds in sustained 12MPH winds was no easy task).

Match results were just sent via email. See you all at the range next month! -Cy

Sounds like a light wind day out there. I'm sure it will pick up for your next match.

Everyone who's shot at CRC in the past tells me that the wind at this range is ever-present. I guess that, if I can learn to call the wind here, shooting anywhere else has got to seem easy.

Default CRC .22LR Steel Dogs Match

Honestly, it always seems like the mornings are fairly calm but it usually picks up in the afternoon.

I know if I have some serious sighting in or accuracy work I try to get there early.

This was the case today too. We got there around 7:30am and there was only a faint breeze but by 10:30am the wind picked up and it never stopped. I stayed after the match and left around 2:00pm; it seemed like the wind calmed down a bit but it never really stopped. On a positive note, the breeze made the temperature feel cooler (and that was nice).
