    Default Resident computer geek.

My current pc is about 8 years old. Replaced bits and pieces of it over the years...

I'm fairly certain the hard drive is on its way out. After 20 or so mins it becomes non responsive and slow (like xp would with that stupid system idle process). I've run various mal/spy/virus programs and gotten no hits, not worried about that. Fairly certain it's the drive... I've never replaced a hd just added them, but I've only got one in this machine.

Point being. I need a new hd and would like to just transfer everything over.. I've got back ups run so not overly concerned with losing stuff.

Don't we have a member here that is a resident geek? I think they work at a shop right by me. Just can't recall their name

Seagate has a mirror/image program (http://www.seagate.com/support/inter...ard-master-dl/) that will mirror/image the hdd to the new drive and last I looked, it was free. Just go buy a new hdd from microcenter, install it and run the program. It only works with seagate and maxtor drives!! I did this with a laptops hdd and went from a 125gb to a 500gb with no issues. But as usual, there are risks and possible issues with software, etc.. Try at your own risk!

8 years old!?! Does it have a crank on the side?

Seriously, if you have backups, install a new drive with a fresh OS install.

I think there are quite a few fellow propellerheads on here.
Personally, I liked paragon backup but haven't used it in a while. It was/is free I believe.
I would also vote for a new PC at this point. 8 years is a long time and there may be other things going bad other than the hard drive too. Desktops especially are pretty cheap for base models, and it'll likely run circles around what you have.

If you're still just looking for a hard drive, what size do you need? I have a large stack of them as I upgrade fairly regularly and might be able to hook you up with something cheap/free.

Other World Computing (http://www.macsales.com/) also has an excellent cloning program that works for PC drives as well as Macs.

My Mac G5 tower was replaced last year, it was 11 years old and had done a pretty good job with all my photo retouching since 2001
