The company that made the original scope mounts for the M1D sniper rifles in WWII is still in business, and still makes the same, identical mounts. Installs them too. But they're pricey as hell. I swear I have a bookmark for them, but can't find it or remember the name. I think I read about it on the CMP forum, but you're talking over $400 for the mount and installation. Then you have to find a scope.
Found it. $400 for the complete mount, and $250 for the installation, but it's supposedly just as authentic as one on a WWII sniper rifle. Hope you want one really bad. http://www.griffinhowe.com/mountsandpads.cfm Still doesn't include a scope.

who made your garand
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Haw haw haw?..
I got a mix-master H&R Garand from the CMP years ago with some pretty deep pitting on the horseshoe and a tomato stake barrel. I'm a lefty and always wanted a scoped Garand, so I had my gunsmith mount a block to the new .308 barrel to which he then mounted a small piece of rail. I relieved the Boyd's lower hg and mounted a 4x Leupold handgun scope on it. I'm pretty much a purist when it comes to milsurps, I think that is the only non period-correct mod I've ever done to a military firearm, but it's fun to shoot and the rifle was the perfect candidate. No GI parts were harmed in the building of this rifle. I think I have a couple pics somewhere I'll try to get posted.
Ultimak is now offering a scout scope mount for Garands that doesn't modify or damage the rifle in any way. Simply replaces the rear handguard and clamps on, easily removed. I want one for my M1. Model M12, $185.

Mounted right to the handguard, huh? How well's that work? Seems like there'd be some movement.
No, the barrel is drilled and tapped for a steel block, and then screwed the piece of rail to the block. I cut out the handguard around the block so it would clear.
You will need to change the barrel .. the mount is on the barrel.. Very simple to do - does not hurt t he receiver - and you can always go back to the original configuration without hurting the rifle. Drilling the receiver for a scope mount is ludicris..yuk.. Can damage it.. Yes I know the D had the mount on the side..but that was a "D".... I have a "C" - with Mounts and scope.. It is on the barrel..easy to do....
Even Springfield -- The US ARMY Springfield - did not like the D...... top
Drilling and tapping? Cutting up the handguard? Changing the barrel? Sorry, I'll go with the M12 first.
