...but when an SSD does fail, the failure is total and complete. No sticking it in the freezer. ;-)
We've gone through several at work, particularly on Macbook Air models.
Personally, I don't think any company is making a decent conventional HDD these days. Quality seems to be pretty poor across the board.
As was mentioned earlier, POST is handled by the BIOS on the motherboard. All of my home systems, other than the home server, are using SSDs as boot drives. POST takes much longer than bootup from the SSD into Windows 7.
